Circle A Home for Horses

Circle A Home for Horses Circle A Home for Horses, Inc. https://www.guidestar.org/profile/46-4105488 We offer sponsorship and adoption for our horses as well as volunteer programs.

is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and rescued equines through paired bonding, learning, and fellowship. Located in the heart of Pungo (south Virginia Beach), our goal is to provide care, rehabilitation and rehoming to unwanted and abused horses. For 7 years, our farm has been rescuing beautiful horses from slaughter and pairing them with childr

en and adults who are in need of emotional healing with great success. We formed a non profit organization to help extend our reach, not only save more horses from unspeakable horrors, but also to provide education to current horse owners and young people joining the world of horse ownership. Circle A Home For Horses also goes out into the community with our Ambassador Horse "Georgia" and her two mini's Pedro and Moonie, who have made many appearances in the Hampton Roads area. We have also created programs with our rescue horses for kids and teens who are needing to build confidence or are considered "at risk" - we have partnered with the Barry Robinson Center in Norfolk and these children come to the farm twice a week to help them bond with a horse and help them return to a healthy, normal life. Recently we have added opportunities for business leaders to be a part of our team building programs. We are not your average animal rescue - we also focus on helping our community and our horses have a great purpose and enjoy working in the programs. In January of 2017 our story caught the attention of WVEC TV LaSalle Blanks who did a feature on our farm and our programs - which has created alot of interest in the unique programs we have. Our farm has 10 rescue horses at this time and our goal is to build a larger barn to house 20 rescues and expand our programs in 2018. Important update regarding cases of New World Screwworm (NWS). A lot of information spreading on social media about closing our borders to Mexico, ultimately halting horse slaughter at this time. How long will it last? No one has the answer

What does that mean for horses, kill buyers and rescues?

Horses owned by kill buyers will most likely be sent to holding pens near the border until the ban is lifted. This is not good for the horses because they will not receive regular care.

We should see kill buyers unloading their horses at auction, or asking the public to ‘bail’ the horses they currently have at their lots.

Due diligence, support rescues that help these horses but take a deep dive into mass bailing operations before donating. The goal is to cut off financial support to kill buyers, effectively limiting the profit they make off the backs of American horses.

Horse slaughter is an ugly, unneeded part of our culture. In 2025, approximately 25,000 horses shipped to slaughter. That number is manageable and could be supported by private buyers and rescues. The myth about old, sick, or injured horses shipping to slaughter is just a myth. Kill buyers are paid by the pound, meaning they look for healthy Quarter Horses, Paints, Drafts, Thoroughbred and Standardbreds.

This may be our opportunity to show our representatives that horse slaughter is not necessary!

60 people from Elevance Health came to the farm for a day of volunteering, community and learning. Wonderful people interested in our rescue, meeting our horses and helping around the farm. We are grateful.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. Read the full press release here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states

General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.

BC or Baby Chance has been adopted! His adoption has been a year in the making, he now has his own very special person.

Baby Chance was rescued from Bastrop kill pen in Louisiana in October 2021. He has spent the last several years at the farm growing up and learning how to be a horse. And what an amazing horse he has turned out to be. Congratulations Annette Ponce and BC. We are so happy for you.
