Here is the Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis)...
These are most often found on honeysuckle, pupate in leaf litter or underground, and are one of our few diurnal moths... As seen in the 2nd photo, they are bumble bee mimics... KπŸ€“

Here is the Imperial (Eacles imperialis)... These are eating sweet gum, but pine is another host (they eat hanging upside down!). The last photo is of one that has just molted---you can see its shed cuticle and head cap beside it. We only get one generation of these here, so once they pupate underground, we won't see them as adults until next Spring... KπŸ€“

Here is the Cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia), which gets big as a hot dog! These are eating sweet gum, but cherry is another common host, and we have also used buttonbush... We only get one generation of these here in VA, so once they make their cocoons, we won't see them as adults until next May... KπŸ€“

In this post, two species are spotlighted: Luna (Actias luna) and Polyphemus (Antheraea polyphemus), whose caterpillars closely resemble one another. The Luna cats (top row) are eating the locally-preferred sweet gum, while the Poly cats (bottom row) are shown eating willow oak and birch... KπŸ€“
