Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad Founded in 1942, OPVRS is the oldest ambulance service in the City of Virginia Beach.

We provide the highest level of emergency care to citizens and visitors of VB. The department was founded in 1942 at the request of the Ocean Park Civic League to provide fire protection. The department was staffed by volunteers of the Ocean Park Men’s Club, which later became known as the Ocean Park Volunteer Fire Department. In the 1950’s a used Army field ambulance was purchased and staffed by the Ocean Park Women’s Club, allowing the department to provide fire and medical services to the community.

Sometimes, the best medicine comes with four paws and a wagging tail! 🧡🐕💙

During a visit to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Rescue 1 members from right: Darden P., Nick D. and EMT intern Paul B. had the pleasure of meeting Apollo, a therapy dog spreading smiles and comfort throughout the hospital.

While EMS is often associated with emergencies and challenging moments, it’s little encounters like these that remind us how much a simple moment of kindness can brighten someone’s day.

Some of the best things you gain from volunteering aren’t things you can put on a résumé. 🧡

When you join an EMT academy, you might expect long hours, challenging exams, practical skills, and PLENTY of studying. 😅

What you might not expect are the friendships that develop along the way.

The people who sit beside you or in front of you in class become your study partners. The ones you practice assessments with become the people cheering you on when you pass your exams. And somewhere between the late-night studying, scenarios, and shared accomplishments, classmates become friends.

These members started their journey together in EMT Academy 86, meeting every Saturday. Along the way, they built connections that continued long after graduation. Today, they are all members of Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad and are currently working through their EMT internships.

Every Sunday from 6:00–8:00 PM, we host a study group at Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, and anyone interested in becoming a volunteer EMT is welcome to stop by!

You’ll have the opportunity to meet current EMT interns and experienced operational members who are happy to answer questions, share their experiences, offer guidance, and help you learn more about the academy, the internship process, and life as a volunteer EMT.

There are a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to become a volunteer EMT, and we’re here to clear a few of them up!

At Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, our members are all different ages and come from different careers and backgrounds. Some join with years of medical experience, while others started with none at all! Whether you’re a student, working full-time, or looking for a way to give back to your community, there’s a place for you in EMS.

Congratulations to Our Newly Certified CIT Members!

Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad was well represented during last week's 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training!

CIT is a nationally recognized program supported by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) that prepares first responders to better recognize, understand, and respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises. The training emphasizes effective communication, de-escalation techniques, su***de prevention, and connecting individuals with appropriate mental health resources.

For EMS providers, these skills are invaluable in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care during some of life's most challenging moments.

Please join us in congratulating Morgan E., Hannah K., Anisa S., Stephen T., and Guy W. on successfully completing the course and earning their CIT certifications!

Breast cancer touches millions of lives, not only those who are diagnosed, but also their families, friends, caregivers, and the communities that stand beside them.

This month is about more than wearing pink. It’s about awareness, education, early detection, support, and remembering that behind every statistic is a person and a story.

Knowing the facts matters. Knowing your body matters. And having conversations about screening and your individual risk with a healthcare professional can make a difference.

At Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, we stand with those currently fighting breast cancer, celebrate survivors, remember those we have lost, and recognize the families and caregivers who walk alongside them. 💗
