The Virginia Beach Anglers Club sent two teams of six anglers to Ocracoke last week to compete in the Ocracoke Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament. There weren’t a lot of fish scored and it showed as most teams only scored 3 or less fish. While many teams were able to find some big bluefish, our teams weren’t as lucky. We look forward to heading back next year and trying again for that top spot!

Some of our anglers did catch some nice fish in the days before the tournament. It was a lot of fun fishing together. If you’re interested in fishing for one of our tournament teams, we have open spots available for the fall tournaments.

A 443 # yellowfin is one heck of a catch!

APPROVED: On November 11, 2024, Earl Gill IV was fishing aboard the Excel captained by Justin Fleck, when he landed this massive 200.94-kilogram (443-pound) yellowfin tuna. With this fish, Earl has set the IGFA All-Tackle World Record as well as the IGFA Men’s 60-kg (130 lb.) Line Class World Record for the species, surpassing the previous records by 16 pounds! The Excel was fishing the Lower Banks off Mexico when this record yellowfin struck Earl’s chunk bait. After an intense 1 hour and 45-minute fight, the crew of the Excel was able to gaff the tuna and bring it aboard. The Excel then returned to port where Earl was able to record the weight on a certified scale at Fisherman’s Landing in San Diego, California.

From the scales to the stories, the IGFA is your official source for world records.

Virginia Beach City Council would like to reinstate the personal property tax for boats in Virginia Beach. The tax was originally in place until its relative dissolution in 2002. A new tax rate of $1.5 per $100 of assessed value is a 150,000,000% increase over the current established rate. The city council cites costs related to dredging and other projects related to waterway access as a cause.

Interested parties should attend the upcoming public hearing at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Wednesday evening, April 16th at 6:00PM.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — In order to help combat inflation in the coming fiscal year, the city manager is proposing several tax and fee rate increases, including placing a tax on pleasure…
