It flew rescue missions, hauled crews and equipment, operated from ships, supported special operations, and became closely associated with some of the most dangerous recovery missions of the Vietnam War.

Big, rugged, and unmistakable, the H-3 family served for decades in roles that demanded range, power, and the ability to keep going when conditions got ugly.

The Grumman A-6 Intruder was not supersonic.

It was not particularly graceful.

It did not carry a gun.

But when the weather turned bad, darkness covered the target, and other aircraft had difficulty finding what they were supposed to hit, the Intruder was exactly the aircraft the U.S. Navy wanted overhead.

The A-6 grew from a 1956 Navy requirement for a carrier-based attack aircraft capable of striking targets at long range, at low altitude, at night, and in virtually any weather. Grumman's design first flew in 1960 as the A2F-1 and, following the 1962 aircraft designation changes, became the A-6 Intruder. It entered fleet service in 1963.

What made the Intruder extraordinary was not raw speed.

It was electronics.

Early A-6s carried the Digital Integrated Attack Navigation Equipment system, better known as DIANE. Search and tracking radars, navigation equipment, cockpit displays, and a digital computer gave the crew an ability that was extraordinary for the early 1960s: attack a preselected target without needing to see it.

The pilot and bombardier-navigator sat side by side, rather than one behind the other. That arrangement was more significant than it might appear. The bombardier-navigator was not simply along for the ride. He operated the complex attack and navigation equipment and worked closely with the pilot to guide the aircraft through darkness, weather, terrain, and enemy defenses.

And here is something people sometimes forget about the Intruder:

A fully loaded A-6 could carry an enormous amount of ordnance for an aircraft operating from a carrier. Later A-6E specifications allowed as much as 18,000 pounds of external stores.

That put tremendous striking power onto a relatively compact carrier aircraft.

Vietnam became the Intruder's proving ground.

VA-75 took the A-6A into combat in 1965. During that first deployment, the squadron's Intruders dropped roughly a quarter of their air wing's ordnance despite the air wing possessing larger numbers of A-4 Skyhawks and F-4 Phantoms.

The Intruder quickly found its niche.

Night.

Rain.

Cloud.

Low altitude.

Long missions over terrain where finding the target could be nearly as difficult as surviving the defenses around it.

A-6 crews developed an unofficial saying that summarized their specialty:

They preferred the bad weather.

One particularly striking example came on April 18, 1966. Two A-6As from VA-85 attacked the Uong Bi thermal power plant near Haiphong at night, delivering approximately 26,000 pounds of bombs. The attack was so substantial that North Vietnamese reporting attributed the damage to B-52s.

But perhaps one mission better illustrates what Intruder crews were being asked to do.

On October 30, 1967, Lieutenant Commander Charles Hunter and Lieutenant Lyle Bull flew a single A-6 against the Red River ferry docks at Hanoi. During the mission they descended to extremely low altitude, evaded repeated surface-to-air missile attacks, struck the target, and escaped. Both men received the Navy Cross.

There was another side to this capability.

The A-6's early electronics were sophisticated, but sophisticated electronics and aircraft carriers are not natural friends.

Heat.

Humidity.

Salt air.

Catapult launches.

Arrested landings.

Vietnam exposed reliability and maintenance problems in the early DIANE system. Keeping the Intruder's electronics functioning demanded enormous effort from maintenance crews aboard the carriers.

But when everything worked, the aircraft could do things few other carrier aircraft could match.

After bombing restrictions changed operations over North Vietnam, Intruders increasingly worked the supply routes through Laos. Crews flew long night interdiction missions searching for trucks and other movement along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

There was no glamorous dogfighting involved.

They went hunting in the dark.

The Intruder continued evolving after Vietnam. The definitive A-6E received improved electronics, and later aircraft equipped with the TRAM system added forward-looking infrared and laser capabilities beneath the nose. The aircraft that had begun as an all-weather radar bomber was gradually becoming a highly capable precision-strike platform.

The basic A-6 design also produced two important relatives.

The KA-6D became an aerial tanker, allowing carrier aircraft to refuel other Navy aircraft in flight.

The electronic warfare EA-6A helped lead to development of the four-seat EA-6B Prowler, whose electronic attack career would continue for decades after the Intruder itself disappeared.

And the A-6 was nowhere near finished fighting.

Intruders participated in American operations over Lebanon during the 1980s and struck Libya during Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986.

Then came Desert Storm.

In 1991, Navy and Marine Corps Intruders flew more than 4,700 combat sorties during the Gulf War. They attacked strategic targets, Iraqi naval forces, air defenses, and battlefield positions while also providing close air support.

An aircraft conceived during the Eisenhower administration was still carrying a major share of the attack mission more than three decades later.

The last front-line A-6s finally left service in 1997.

By then, 687 Intruders had been delivered to the Navy.

The A-6 never achieved the public celebrity of the F-14 Tomcat or F-4 Phantom.

Perhaps that fits the aircraft.

The Intruder's specialty was going where visibility was poor, where the weather was miserable, and where somebody still needed the target hit.

No afterburner.

No glamorous dogfight.

Just two people sitting shoulder to shoulder behind a mass of 1960s electronics, taking a heavily loaded attack aircraft off a moving ship and disappearing into the darkness.

Bockscar — The B-29 That Carried Fat Man

Let me tell you about Bockscar.

On August 9, 1945, the B-29 Superfortress Bockscar took off from Tinian carrying the “Fat Man” atomic bomb.

The aircraft was a Silverplate-modified B-29, specially altered for the atomic mission. Weight was reduced, the bomb bays were modified, and other changes were made so the aircraft could carry weapons unlike anything a bomber crew had handled before.

Its name came from Captain Frederick C. Bock, whose regular crew normally flew the aircraft.

But on the Nagasaki mission, Bock was not at the controls.

Major Charles W. Sweeney and his crew flew Bockscar instead, while Bock and his crew operated another B-29 used for observation and instrumentation.

The original target that morning was Kokura. Weather and smoke prevented a clear bombing run, so the mission moved to the secondary target, Nagasaki.

At 11:02 a.m., Bockscar released Fat Man.

The aircraft survived the blast, but the crew still faced a serious fuel shortage on the return flight. They diverted to Okinawa and landed with very little fuel remaining.

After the war, Bockscar survived as well.

Today, the aircraft is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

It is one of those machines that cannot be separated from the history it carried.

Few military aircraft have proven as versatile as the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.

Designed during the 1970s and entering U.S. Navy service in 1983, the Hornet was built to replace several different aircraft with one multirole platform. Instead of maintaining separate fleets of fighters and attack aircraft, the Navy wanted a single aircraft capable of performing both missions.

Its name reflected that goal.

F for Fighter.

A for Attack.

It was one of the first production combat aircraft specifically designed from the beginning to excel at both.

The Hornet quickly proved that concept.

A single aircraft could launch from a carrier, es**rt a strike package, engage enemy fighters, attack ground targets, return to the carrier, and be ready to fly a completely different mission the next day.

That flexibility transformed naval aviation.

The aircraft served with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and numerous allied nations, becoming one of the most widely operated Western combat aircraft of the late Cold War and post-Cold War era.

Its combat record began almost immediately.

During Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986, Navy Hornets flew combat missions against Libya.

In Operation Desert Storm five years later, the aircraft demonstrated exactly why it had been designed as a multirole fighter.

On the opening day of the air campaign, two U.S. Navy F/A-18Cs from VFA-81 "Sunliners" were en route to bomb an Iraqi airfield when they intercepted two Iraqi MiG-21s.

The Hornets shot down both fighters.

Then, instead of returning to the carrier, the pilots continued to their original target and successfully completed the bombing mission.

Few aircraft have better demonstrated the meaning of "fighter/attack" in a single sortie.

And here is something many people do not know—

The Hornet was the first operational U.S. tactical aircraft to incorporate extensive use of digital flight controls. Its fly-by-wire flight control system constantly interpreted pilot inputs through computers, improving handling, stability, and maneuverability. This allowed engineers to design an aircraft that was naturally less stable but significantly more agile in combat.

Another overlooked feature was its exceptional reliability aboard aircraft carriers.

Carrier aviation is notoriously hard on airplanes.

Violent catapult launches.

Arrested landings.

Saltwater corrosion.

Limited maintenance space.

The Hornet was designed with these realities in mind, and its maintainability became one of its greatest strengths. Ground crews could access many systems quickly, allowing the aircraft to generate high sortie rates during sustained combat operations.

Marine Corps Hornets proved equally valuable.

Operating from expeditionary airfields as well as aircraft carriers, they flew close air support, battlefield interdiction, armed reconnaissance, and es**rt missions from the Gulf War through Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Hornet also became one of the most recognizable demonstration aircraft in the world.

Since 1986, the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels have flown the F/A-18, showcasing not only the aircraft's maneuverability but also the professionalism and precision of naval aviation.

Although many front-line Navy squadrons have transitioned to the larger F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the original Hornet continues to serve with the U.S. Marine Corps and numerous allied air forces around the world.

Its legacy extends far beyond its performance.

The Hornet proved that one aircraft could successfully replace several specialized designs without sacrificing combat capability.

It changed how modern air forces thought about multirole aviation.

Built to fight.

Built to strike.

Built to do both exceptionally well.

Some aircraft destroy targets.

Others ensure those targets are never surprised.

The Boeing RC-135 is one of the most important intelligence aircraft ever built, yet it rarely receives the public recognition given to bombers or fighters. It carries no bombs, no air-to-air missiles, and is not designed to engage the enemy directly.

Instead, its mission is to collect information.

Derived from the Boeing C-135 Stratolifter and KC-135 Stratotanker family, the RC-135 first entered service during the early 1960s as the Cold War intensified. Over the decades, it evolved into a family of highly specialized reconnaissance aircraft, each designed to collect a different type of intelligence.

The best known variant today is the RC-135V/W Rivet Joint.

From the outside, it resembles a modified airliner.

Inside, it is something entirely different.

The aircraft is filled with sophisticated electronic receivers, communications equipment, computers, and operator workstations. Instead of passengers, the cabin is occupied by intelligence specialists who spend their mission searching for electronic signals across hundreds of miles of airspace.

And here is something many people do not realize—

The RC-135 does not need to cross a nation's border to gather valuable intelligence.

Modern radar systems, military radios, air-defense networks, and electronic emissions can often be detected from international airspace. This allows the aircraft to collect enormous amounts of information while remaining outside hostile territory.

Its primary mission is Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).

That includes:

Intercepting military communications.

Locating radar systems.

Monitoring electronic emissions.

Identifying air-defense networks.

Tracking aircraft activity.

Supporting battlefield commanders with real-time intelligence.

Every radar that switches on...

Every radio transmission...

Every electronic signal...

Can become valuable intelligence.

Another lesser-known fact is that the RC-135 is not one aircraft, but an entire family of specialized reconnaissance platforms.

The RC-135V/W Rivet Joint focuses primarily on signals intelligence.

The RC-135S Cobra Ball is optimized to observe and collect data on ballistic missile launches. It is instantly recognizable by the black-painted wing on its right side, a feature that reduces glare during optical tracking of missile tests.

The RC-135U Combat Sent studies foreign radar systems, helping analysts understand how potential adversaries detect and track aircraft.

Each version performs a different mission, but all share the same objective:

Understand the battlefield before combat begins.

RC-135 crews are also remarkably large compared to most military aircraft.

A typical Rivet Joint mission includes pilots, navigators, electronic warfare officers, airborne systems engineers, and numerous intelligence operators working together for missions that may last more than ten hours. With aerial refueling, the aircraft can remain airborne for far longer, allowing continuous surveillance over areas of strategic interest.

Throughout the Cold War, RC-135 aircraft routinely monitored Soviet military activity from international airspace. After the Cold War, they continued supporting operations over the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and many other regions where intelligence collection was critical to military planning.

Today, they remain among the most heavily tasked aircraft in the U.S. Air Force.

Whether monitoring military exercises, supporting allied operations, or collecting intelligence during international crises, the RC-135 often arrives long before combat aircraft.

Because before commanders decide what to strike...

They first need to know what is there.

The Boeing RC-135 proves that information can be as decisive as firepower.

It does not win battles by dropping bombs.

It helps ensure those bombs—and the people delivering them—have the best possible chance of success.

The Martin B-57 Canberra was America's first operational jet bomber.

Yet despite its importance, it is often overshadowed by aircraft such as the B-52 Stratofortress, F-105 Thunderchief, and F-4 Phantom II.

Its story deserves far more attention.

The B-57 was the American-built version of the British English Electric Canberra, an aircraft whose performance impressed the U.S. Air Force so greatly that Martin was licensed to produce an extensively modified version in the United States. Although based on the British design, the American B-57 incorporated numerous structural, avionics, and systems changes to meet U.S. operational requirements.

When it entered service in the mid-1950s, the B-57 represented a significant leap forward in tactical bombing. Powered by two turbojet engines, it could fly faster and higher than the piston-engine bombers it replaced while carrying a substantial conventional bomb load.

Originally developed as a tactical bomber, the aircraft soon found itself fighting a very different kind of war.

Vietnam.

The B-57 entered combat during the early years of American involvement and quickly became one of the Air Force's principal tactical bombers operating from bases throughout South Vietnam and Thailand.

Unlike the enormous B-52, the Canberra worked much closer to the battlefield.

Its missions included:

Interdiction.

Close air support.

Armed reconnaissance.

Night attack.

Battlefield illumination.

Precision strikes against enemy supply routes and troop concentrations.

One of the aircraft's greatest strengths was its stability.

Pilots consistently praised the Canberra as an exceptionally smooth bombing platform. Its predictable handling characteristics made it well suited for low-level attack profiles and precision conventional bombing, even under difficult weather conditions.

But perhaps the most fascinating chapter in the Canberra's history came later in the war.

The B-57G Tropic Moon III.

This highly specialized version transformed the bomber into one of the most advanced night attack aircraft of the Vietnam War.

Equipped with forward-looking infrared (FLIR), low-light-level television cameras, laser range-finding equipment, and sophisticated navigation systems, the B-57G could locate and attack targets in darkness that earlier aircraft simply could not find.

At a time when most combat aircraft still depended largely upon daylight and visual identification, the B-57G demonstrated how sensors would shape the future of aerial warfare.

Many of the technologies pioneered aboard these aircraft would later become standard equipment on modern strike aircraft.

And here is something many people do not know—

The Canberra was one of the few bombers to serve successfully in several completely different roles.

It flew as a tactical bomber.

A reconnaissance aircraft.

An electronic warfare platform.

A target tug.

An atmospheric research aircraft.

And even as NASA's famous WB-57, a highly modified high-altitude research aircraft that continues flying scientific missions today.

That remarkable adaptability speaks to the soundness of the original design.

The B-57 also earned a reputation for survivability.

Many aircraft returned from combat with severe battle damage that would have destroyed less rugged machines. Crews often credited the bomber's strong construction and forgiving flight characteristics for bringing them home after missions over some of the most heavily defended areas of Southeast Asia.

Although the Canberra was gradually replaced by more modern aircraft during the 1970s, its influence extended far beyond its years in front-line service.

It bridged two generations of military aviation.

Designed during the early Cold War.

Proven over Vietnam.

Its legacy helped shape the precision strike and night attack capabilities that define modern air warfare today.

The Boeing B-52D Stratofortress was never designed for the jungles of Southeast Asia.

It was built to fight World War III.

When the first B-52s entered service during the 1950s, their primary mission was nuclear deterrence. They were expected to fly across continents carrying nuclear weapons against strategic targets deep inside the Soviet Union. Everything about the aircraft reflected that mission—long range, enormous payload, and the ability to remain airborne for extended periods with aerial refueling.

But history had other plans.

As American involvement in Vietnam expanded, the Strategic Air Command found itself using one of the world's most sophisticated nuclear bombers for conventional warfare.

The B-52D became the aircraft most closely associated with that mission.

Unlike earlier versions, the D-model underwent an extensive modification program known as "Big Belly." This modification dramatically increased the aircraft's conventional bomb load. Internal bomb racks were redesigned, allowing the bomber to carry 84 500-pound bombs inside the fuselage while additional bombs were mounted beneath the wings.

In total, a single B-52D could carry more than 100 conventional bombs on one mission.

Few combat aircraft in history have matched that level of destructive capacity.

Yet the bomber's greatest strength was not simply the number of bombs it carried.

It was the way it fought.

B-52Ds rarely operated alone.

They typically attacked in carefully planned three-aircraft formations, known as "cells." Flying at high altitude and maintaining precise spacing, the bombers released their loads in carefully timed sequences that blanketed large target areas with remarkable consistency.

To soldiers on the ground, the attack became known simply as an Arc Light strike.

The aircraft themselves were usually invisible.

The first indication was often a distant rumble.

Then the earth began to shake.

Within seconds, hundreds of bombs impacted almost simultaneously, creating a continuous wave of explosions that could extend for thousands of feet across the battlefield.

For American and South Vietnamese forces, these strikes were often used against enemy base camps, troop concentrations, supply routes, and fortified positions hidden beneath dense jungle.

The psychological effect could be as significant as the physical destruction.

And here is something many people do not know—

Most B-52 crews never actually saw the targets they were bombing.

Flying at altitudes frequently above 30,000 feet, they relied on radar navigation, carefully calculated bombing data, and highly trained navigators. The jungle canopy often concealed everything below. Their mission depended upon precision planning rather than visual identification.

Another little-known fact is that the B-52 carried a crew of six:

Navigator
Electronic Warfare Officer
Tail Gunner

The tail gunner occupied a compartment isolated from the rest of the crew and was responsible for defending the bomber's rear hemisphere. Early B-52Ds carried four .50-caliber M3 machine guns in a remotely controlled tail turret, making them among the last American bombers equipped with defensive gun armament.

Those guns were not merely symbolic.

On 18 December 1972, during Operation Linebacker II, Staff Sergeant Samuel O. Turner, serving as a B-52 tail gunner aboard Brown 03, shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-21. Two days later, another B-52 tail gunner, Staff Sergeant Albert E. Moore, was credited with destroying a second MiG-21.

These remain the last confirmed aerial victories scored by American bomber defensive guns.

The B-52D also played a central role during Operation Linebacker II in December 1972. Flying from Andersen Air Force Base on Guam and U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield in Thailand, the bombers struck heavily defended targets around Hanoi and Haiphong in one of the largest strategic bombing campaigns since the Second World War.

The missions were dangerous.

North Vietnam possessed one of the world's densest surface-to-air missile networks. During the campaign, several B-52s were lost to SA-2 Guideline missiles despite extensive electronic countermeasures and fighter support.

Yet the bomber continued to fly.

Today, the B-52D has long since retired from operational service, but its legacy remains inseparable from the Vietnam War. Although designed to deliver nuclear weapons across continents, it became one of history's most effective conventional strategic bombers, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to a conflict its designers had never envisioned.

Few aircraft have so completely transformed their original purpose.

Built for nuclear war.

Remembered for conventional war.

The Boeing EA-18G Growler looks like a Super Hornet.

That is exactly the point.

Developed from the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet, the EA-18G was created to replace the Navy’s aging EA-6B Prowler and carry airborne electronic attack into a new generation. The first operational Growler squadron became ready for deployment in 2009, and the aircraft subsequently became the Navy’s principal tactical electronic attack platform.

But the Growler is not simply a Super Hornet with jamming pods attached.

Its primary weapon is the electromagnetic spectrum.

Modern air-defense networks depend upon radar to search for aircraft, track them, guide interceptors, and support surface-to-air missile engagements. Military forces also depend heavily upon communications and electronic networks to coordinate their operations. The Growler exists to detect, identify, locate, disrupt, and attack parts of that electronic environment.

And that creates an unusual kind of air combat.

A Growler crew may contribute to defeating an enemy system without ever firing a conventional weapon at it.

The aircraft carries specialized electronic warfare equipment, including wingtip receiver systems and external electronic attack pods. Its crew consists of a pilot and an Electronic Warfare Officer, or EWO, who together must operate the aircraft while interpreting a complicated electronic battlespace that cannot be understood simply by looking outside the cockpit.

The Growler can accompany strike aircraft toward defended targets and interfere with enemy radar systems, reducing their ability to detect and engage the aircraft it is supporting.

But here is something many people do not realize—

The Growler can do more than jam.

It can also physically attack air-defense systems.

EA-18Gs can employ the AGM-88 family of anti-radiation missiles against hostile radar emitters, giving the aircraft the ability to combine electronic attack with kinetic suppression of enemy air defenses.

In simple terms, an enemy radar operator can face a difficult problem.

Use the radar and potentially reveal its position.

Or shut it down and surrender part of the air-defense network's ability to see.

The Growler also retains considerable performance from its Super Hornet ancestry. Unlike the four-seat EA-6B Prowler it replaced, the EA-18G shares an airframe and many systems with a modern strike fighter. That commonality allows it to operate alongside other carrier aircraft while retaining the speed and performance required to accompany tactical strike packages.

It is also fully carrier capable.

Growlers launch from catapults, recover using arresting wires, fold their wings for crowded carrier decks, and deploy as part of naval aviation alongside fighters, airborne early-warning aircraft, helicopters, and other components of the carrier air wing.

Yet not every Growler operates from a carrier.

The Navy also maintains expeditionary electronic attack squadrons capable of deploying from land bases to support joint forces. This reflects something important about the aircraft: its value extends well beyond protecting Navy aircraft.

Air Force aircraft, Navy aircraft, Marine Corps aircraft, and other joint or coalition forces can all benefit when hostile electronic systems are disrupted.

And the Growler's importance is increasing rather than disappearing.

Modern warfare is becoming more dependent upon sensors, radar, communications, data links, and networks. That means control of the electromagnetic spectrum has become part of the struggle for control of the battlefield itself.

A fighter may destroy an enemy aircraft.

But an electronic attack aircraft can interfere with the enemy's ability to understand what is happening in the first place.
