Can you imagine escaping a violent situation with nothing but the clothes on your back? Can you imagine starting over? Can you imagine feeling like you don’t look your best during what is already a tough time? Women that are victims of domestic violence deserve to have their confidence and to feel beautiful. One way to help is by donating makeup! If you’re interested in making a donation of unopened makeup in any color or shade including eyeliner and mascara. Neutral tones are the safest but anything is appreciated. 💜

“In their study of sheltered battered women, Arias and Pape (1999) found that psychological abuse contributed significant unique variance to battered women’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and their reported intentions to terminate relationships with abusive partners, even after controlling for the effects of physical violence. In a sample of court-involved battered women, Dutton et al. (1999) reported that symptomatic responses to abuse, including PTSD and depression, were largely predicted by psychological abuse, rather than by physical violence,” (Mechanic, Weaver, & Resick, 2008)

May is mental health awareness month, and studies have shown that domestic violence has a significant impact on mental health. Please consider donating purses, feminine hygiene products, hygiene products, gift cards, makeup, etc to The Purse Nurse. All donations go to Samaritan House and homeless women.

“There is no question that homeless women show disproportionately high prevalence rates of lifetime mental health problems ( 1 ). The National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC), a data set comprising a nationwide sample of homeless adults, noted that approximately 43% of the homeless population are women: 10% are living as couples, 43% are mothers whose children are with them, and the rest are women living as single adults ( 1 ). The study found that only 28% of women living with children had never had any problem with alcohol, drugs, or mental health in their lifetime. Of the remaining 72% of women living with children, 54% had a mental health problem, 40% had an alcohol problem, and 46% had a drug problem ( 1 ). In this same data set, women living as individuals (including mothers without their children) had similar prevalence rates of drug and alcohol problems but higher rates of mental illness in their lifetimes. Twenty-three percent had never had a problem with alcohol, drugs, or mental health in their lifetime, 65% had a mental health problem, 43% had an alcohol problem, and 43% had a drug problem ( 1 ),” (Tam, Zlotnick, & Bradley, 2008).

May is mental health awareness month. Please consider donating purses, feminine hygiene products, makeup, hygiene products etc to help our homeless women.

HI friends! When I went to Samaritan House yesterday, they gave me a list of items they need. One really great item was gift cards. This is what they stated specifically.

My original post that gave me this idea:

So…I probably should have included more info on my post about purses yesterday. I have plenty of purses and until yesterday, I had too many. I tried selling them but that didn’t work out, so I donated them to Samaritan House. With that being said, I saw an awesome idea one day about taking an old purse and filling it with feminine hygiene products to help someone in need. So, I also donated feminine hygiene products. I chose Samaritan House because my work bestie was a victim of domestic violence and was murdered 5 years ago. I did it in honor of her. Sophie was a wife, a mom, and a kickass nurse 💜My 4 East peeps and maybe some of my Maryview peeps know who I’m talking about.

This gave me the idea of collecting new, gently used, and/or good condition purses and unopened boxes of feminine hygiene products to keep donating to Samaritan House in honor of Sophie. It’s a blessing to finally find something I can do to honor her. So, if anyone can find a purse they are willing to part with or if anyone is willing to donate feminine hygiene products, please let me know! Let’s start a purse drive! TIA 🙏🏾💜
