(QLI) is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization established in 2016, that works to inspire, promote, and enhance the “Quality of Life” of youth and their families in our community through personal, educational, and social development and growth. QLI understands the importance of one’s well-being and provides various programs, events, and resources to ensure each individual in our community truly und

Quality of Life Inc. allocates funds to serve, assist, develop, and grow the local community and its surroundings by providing services and programs such as Mentoring (school-based, evidenced-based, individual, and group), Life Skill’s Coaching, Tutoring, Truancy Prevention, ReEntry Services, and more for both youth and their families. hosts and facilitates numerous events during the year to assist our community with items as school supplies, hygiene items, food, water, and shelter. reinvests in our youth by providing scholarships annually to high school seniors enrolling in secondary education. also assists and educates parents and families with tools, education, and resources to assist with removing barriers faced by their at-risk children to preserve the family unit. 🎒 10th Annual Back to School Drive!

Yesterday, Quality of Life Inc. celebrated our 10th Annual Back to School Community Day! For a decade, this event has been about bringing our community together, supporting families, and making sure our young people head into the school year feeling prepared, encouraged, and supported.

This year was another incredible day filled with free school supplies, great food, games, a live DJ, family activities, community resources, and plenty of smiles. 💜💛

We have to give a HUGE shoutout to Old Navy, especially the Old Navy Landstown Commons team! You continue to show up for our youth and families year after year, and your support helps make this possible. We are incredibly grateful for your continued partnership and commitment to our community.

We are proud to celebrate our President, Deuene Hickman, on receiving the Youth Impact Award from Newport News Public Schools' Office of Youth Development and Family Engagement.

This recognition reflects years of dedication to supporting youth, strengthening families, and creating opportunities for young people to thrive. While the award recognizes an individual, it also speaks to the collective impact made possible through strong partnerships, an incredible team, and a shared commitment to serving our community.

We are especially grateful to Newport News Public Schools for their continued partnership and trust. Together, we have supported hundreds of students each year through mental health services, mentoring, youth development, family engagement, and violence prevention initiatives.

A lot of adults learned how to survive, not how to slow down and process what they’ve been through.

So they keep moving.
Keep providing.
Keep carrying everybody else.

Until burnout starts showing up as irritability, exhaustion, shutting down, or feeling disconnected from themselves and the people around them.

Outpatient therapy gives adults space to unpack stress, grief, trauma, and emotional overload in healthier ways.

Getting support for yourself also helps strengthen the people connected to you.

This week marks National Prevention Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness around mental wellness, emotional support, youth development, and the importance of early intervention before challenges turn into crisis.

At Quality of Life, prevention is at the center of the work we do every day.

Prevention looks like:
Safe spaces.
Mentorship.
Mental health support.
Life skills.
Conflict resolution.
Trusted adults showing up consistently.
Giving youth and families support before they reach a breaking point.

Through our programs and services, we work to help youth and adults build healthier coping skills, strengthen emotional wellness, improve communication, and feel more supported in navigating life’s challenges.

Because prevention is more than reacting after something goes wrong.

Every day, we get to witness young people stepping outside of their comfort zones, learning how to trust themselves, speak up, and believe in their own potential.

We’ve seen teens who once stayed quiet begin to find their voice.

Behavior like frustration, withdrawal, or acting out can sometimes be connected to stress, anxiety, or emotional overload.

Understanding emotional behavior helps adults respond with patience instead of punishment, creating stronger relationships and supporting child mental health and emotional development.
