Lance Cpl. Jacob J. Toves, 27, of Grover Beach died Thursday in southwestern Afghanistan’s Helmand province.
Toves was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, which is part of the 3rd Marine Division, in Okinawa, Japan.
Toves enlisted in November 2006. He wrote on his MySpace Web page that he was working at continuing his education with the goal of attaining a master’s degree within the next five years.
“My two-year goal is to survive deployment and be an upstanding Marine,” Toves wrote on his MySpace blog.
Standfest died early Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province of Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a patrol pursuing enemy forces.
Standfest, who was single, enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 27, 2008. He was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at the Combat Center. This was his first deployment.
Jeff Standfest was a canine handler and a combat engineer whose dog was killed recently by a roadside bomb. Standfest, who suffered a concussion in that incident, recently returned to his duties with a new dog.
