Our kids are being treated with toxic Anthracyclines for their cancer. These chemotherapy options can cause irreversible heart damage. Abby’s Hero Fund honors Abby by researching how to detect early signs of heart damage. Just because survivors hair grows back doesn’t mean they are living their healthiest lives. Abby should be here and her legacy will continue with this much needed research. ❤️💚

Childhood cancer survivors deserve not only a cure, but a healthy future.

Many children with cancer receive anthracycline chemotherapies – lifesaving treatments that help them beat cancer. But for some survivors, these treatments can cause serious heart damage years later, even leading to heart failure. 💔

Thanks to support from the TEAM ABBY Gives St. Baldrick’s Hero Fund, Dr. Hari Narayan is working to change that. Using advanced imaging technology, this research aims to detect early signs of heart damage in adolescent and young adult survivors and develop personalized treatments that could prevent heart failure before it starts.

This grant honors Abby, who was diagnosed with Pre-B ALL just before her 5th birthday. 💔 After a successful bone marrow transplant, Abby courageously battled graft-versus-host disease and heart disease for years. Though she passed away in 2021, her legacy lives on through the Hero Fund, which continues to inspire hope and support research that will help children not only beat cancer, but also go on to live healthier, fuller lives after treatment.

In honor of National Cancer Survivor Month, donate to help advance research for life after cancer: https://ow.ly/U9vc50Z9tO1

Because every child deserves a future filled with health, hope, and possibility.

Thank you VBSchools for sharing our story submitted by Megan Eileen. Dalton was blessed to have educators during his cancer journey that allowed him to the best student and to love school. Now our community continues to say Dalton’s name and support our mission to fund pediatric cancer research. 💚

Dr. Sorensen is one of the researchers we have helped fund because of our donors and community. 💚

Promising new research is bringing hope to the Ewing sarcoma community. 💙

Researchers at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia have developed a new targeted cancer therapy that showed remarkable results in preclinical studies for Ewing sarcoma and several other cancers.

The therapy targets a protein called IL1RAP, found on the surface of certain cancer cells but largely absent from healthy tissue. By attaching a cancer-fighting drug to an antibody that recognizes this protein, researchers created a treatment designed to precisely attack cancer cells while minimizing harm to normal cells.

In multiple Ewing sarcoma models, the therapy:
• Eliminated established tumors
• Dramatically reduced the spread of cancer (metastasis)
• Demonstrated a strong safety profile in preclinical testing
The findings were recently published in Cancer Discovery and researchers say the data support moving toward human clinical trials in the near future.

“This isn’t a distant possibility,” said senior author Dr. Poul Sorensen. “The data position this for clinical trials in the very near future.”

We are also proud to share that Dr. Poul Sorensen serves on the Strategic Advisory Board of the Ewing Sarcoma Institute (ESI). His decades of dedication to Ewing sarcoma research continue to help advance new understanding and potential treatment approaches for patients around the world.

Researchers believe IL1RAP may act like a “protective shield” that helps cancer cells survive as they travel through the body and form metastases. This new approach turns that shield into a target — delivering treatment directly into the cancer cells themselves.

While more work remains before this therapy can be tested in patients, this research represents an exciting and encouraging step forward in the search for more precise and effective treatments for Ewing sarcoma and other cancers.

We are deeply grateful to the researchers and collaborators around the world dedicated to advancing better treatments and hope for patients and families.🎗️

It was a great day for baseball! Thank you to for hosting the 2nd Annual Devin Flaherty’s Classic. Thank you to the Flaherty family and friends for coming out today. Devin’s name and stories were shared today. Dalton’s Dad always says that pediatric oncology nurses are angels here on earth. They play such in important role in the care of the child and their family. Nurses are involved in research too. Their understanding of clinical trials is vital in helping parents navigate what steps need to be taken along the way. Thank you to all of the Nurses !! We would love for you to share a name or story of your favorite nurse.
