Remembering our beloved volunteer and friend, Linda Long.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our longtime member and volunteer Ms. Linda Long, who entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Born on January 9, 1949, Linda dedicated her life to bringing warmth, comfort, and care to others. We are deeply grateful for the years of dedication, service, and compassion they shared with our organization and community.

For many years, Linda was a pillar of the Newborns in Need - Tidewater Chapter. A deeply talented crafter, she poured her heart into sewing totes or crocheting beautiful sweaters, hats, and blanket sets, as well as crafting receiving blankets and totes. Her kindness extended far beyond her craft room; Linda was also on the front lines of our mission, packing and personally delivering Newborn Immediate Need Kits to our many Community Partners.

Linda leaves to cherish her memory her loving twin sister, Lesa Richardson, extended family, a host of close friends, as well as her entire Newborn In Need volunteer family.

Funeral and celebration of life arrangements are as follows:

Good afternoon NIN family,

May always feels like a month filled with warmth, gratitude, and celebration. As flowers continue to bloom and the days grow brighter, we are reminded of the nurturing spirit that surrounds the work we do. It is also the month when we celebrate Mother’s Day, a time to honor mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and all those who provide love, comfort, and support to children and families every day.
Here’s something educational for the month: Mother’s Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, created to recognize the sacrifices and love of mothers everywhere. Studies continue to show that emotional support during pregnancy and early parenthood can greatly improve both maternal and infant well-being. Something as simple as receiving encouragement, baby essentials, or knowing others care can make a lasting difference for a new mother.

And now for a little May humor, May is that interesting time of year when people are constantly checking the weather before leaving the house. One minute it feels like spring, and the next it feels like summer arrived early! It’s also the season when gardens start growing quickly… including the weeds. Kind of like our craft supplies somehow multiplying at home when we’re not looking!

Word of the Month: Nurture

To nurture means to care for, encourage, and help something grow. That is exactly what each of you does through your service, your donations, your sewing, and your willingness to give your time and talents to others. Every blanket stitched, every kit packed, every item donated, and every hour volunteered helps nurture not only babies, but also the mothers and families who receive them.

This month, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us remember that even the smallest acts of care can have a powerful impact. Thank you for continuing to nurture hope, kindness, and compassion in our community. I am truly grateful to serve alongside each of you as we continue making a difference one baby, one family, and one act of love at a time.

Happy Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day to each of you! February is the perfect time to celebrate friendship, kindness, and the love we share not only with family and friends, but with the many babies and families we serve together. Your dedication and generosity truly reflect what this season is all about: caring for others and showing love through action.

A little February history: Valentine’s Day dates back to ancient Rome and the story of St. Valentine, who was known for acts of kindness and compassion. Over time, the day has grown into a worldwide celebration of love and friendship. It feels especially fitting for Newborns in Need, where love is stitched into every blanket and packed into every baby kit we prepare.

Here’s something educational for the month: February is also American Heart Month. It’s a great reminder to take care of our own hearts physically and emotionally so we can continue caring for others. Something as simple as staying active, reducing stress, and connecting with supportive friends and community can make a big difference in our overall health and well-being.

And now for a little February humor did you know February is the only month where you can make (and possibly break!) all your New Year’s resolutions in just 28 days? If your resolution has already been “adjusted,” you’re in good company. Around here, we like to say our favorite resolution is simply to keep showing up and doing good where we can!

Thank you for continuing to give your time, talents, and heart to Newborns in Need Tidewater. Whether you join us for meetings, donate items, or support in quiet ways behind the scenes, please know that you are appreciated more than words can express. I am grateful to serve alongside each of you as we continue spreading love and comfort throughout our community.

As we step into January, I want to wish each of you a year filled with peace, purpose, and possibilities. Thank you for starting this new year with a heart for service—your dedication continues to make a real difference for families in our community.

A little history for the month: January is named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions—one face looking back at the past and one looking forward to the future. That feels fitting for us as we reflect on the impact we made last year and get excited about what we will accomplish together in the year ahead.

Here’s something educational: January is also National Birth Defects Prevention Month. It’s a reminder of how important early care, healthy habits, and community support are for babies and families—exactly what Newborns in Need stands for.

And because we all need a little laugh—did you know January is the month when gym memberships skyrocket and attendance drops by February? If your New Year’s resolution already needs a “do-over,” don’t worry—you’re not alone!

Word of the Month: Renewal

January is a season of fresh starts. Renewal means beginning again with hope, purpose, and a renewed heart. It’s about learning from yesterday, letting go of what no longer serves us, and stepping forward ready to grow.

At Newborns in Need Tidewater, renewal looks like new opportunities to serve, new families to support, and new ways to show love through our hands and hearts. As we begin this year, let’s renew our commitment to kindness, service, and community—knowing that every small act of care can bring new beginnings to someone else’s life.
