*Haiti is in a Political and Criminal Crisis that Should Not be Ignored*
A coalition of criminal gangs is close to capturing Haiti’s beleaguered capital of Port-au-Prince. The ongoing crisis in Haiti defies traditional definitions of intrastate conflict. The crisis goes beyond a scourge of gang violence, as the gangs challenge the authority of the state. Yet, the gangs have not taken over the country, though they likely could do so at any time. Instead, the gangs appear to operate in parallel to the state, enabled by political instability, corruption, and weak institutions.

Sexual violence against children in Haiti has increased 1,000% since 2023, turning their bodies "into battlegrounds", spokesman James Elder said....Mr Elder gave an example of a 16-year-old girl who had left home to go shopping, and then was seized by armed men. She was beaten, drugged, and repeatedly r***d.

Unicef says gangs are inflicting "unimaginable horrors on children".

The armed groups have destroyed the Hospital MEVS in Haiti 🇭🇹 😠

12/11/2024

I received the worst news from Haiti.

The armed groups have destroyed our school in Port-au-Prince, the capital, and have also killed some people. Many have been forced to flee the neighborhood, leaving with only the clothes on their backs.😢

We have sacrificed so much to establish the school; now we have to start all over again😞

Thank you to those who have reached out to us.

Young boys are often used as informers “because they’re invisible and not seen as a threat,” Narayan said in a phone interview from Haiti. Some are given weapons and forced to participate in attacks. Girls, meanwhile, are forced to cook, clean and even used as so-called “wives” for gang members.

“They’re not doing this voluntarily,” said Geeta Narayan, UNICEF’s representative in Haiti. “Even when they are armed with weapons, the child here is the victim.”
