The Southern Workers Assembly is hosting our first Virginia Worker School on August 1st in Richmond, Virginia.

This gathering comes at a time when workers and the labor movement face betrayal from those elected to power, attacks on our rights, and the threats posed by AI and data centers to precarious workers and the environment. The time for workers to come together and fight back is now. The Governor’s rejection of public sector collective bargaining rights and the ongoing affordability crisis demonstrate what we know- that workers will have to use our own power and be our own voice to secure what we need and what we deserve.

This school will bring together our assemblies, coworkers, unorganized workers, and labor community from across the state to learn from local struggles and labor history, share and sharpen organizing skills, and strategize together as we move ahead.

We will be gathering and welcoming workers from
- Public sector workers and Teachers
- Manufacturing and the Trades
- Service Workers and Gig Workers
(and more)

We’re honored to have champion for justice, Selwyn Jones, stand with Abolish Slavery Virginia in the fight to end slavery and involuntary servitude—without exception—in Virginia.

This movement isn’t just about changing words in our Constitution. It’s about ending a legal loophole that still allows people to be subjected to forced labor because of a criminal conviction, and extending that fight to people held in immigration detention as well. Our campaign is grounded in the belief that human dignity should never be conditional. That message is central to our organizing and public education efforts.

Thank you, Selwyn, for your leadership, your voice, and your commitment to justice. Together, we’re building a coalition that believes Virginia can become the next state to say:

No Slavery. No Exceptions.

Most Virginians don't know this: slavery is still legal here.

It's written into our state constitution - permitted as punishment for a crime. That's the exception clause, and it's still on the books today.

Naming it plainly is the first step to ending it. Slavery should have no exceptions, no loopholes, no fine print.

Share this so your neighbors know the truth. Then join the fight to end the exception in Virginia. Together, we can finish what abolition started.

In the courts, the SPLC defends and seeks justice for victims of discriminatory practices and laws that target and incarcerate lower-income individuals and people of color.

We must reform the criminal legal system so that it prioritizes rehabilitation and operates fairly and equitably.
