Island Grown Our mission is to build a regenerative and equitable food system with the Martha’s Vineyard community We are a community non-profit on Martha’s Vineyard.

In 2006 a group of farmers, grocers, feed store owners, cooks, food writers, educators and parents came together to address issues in our food system. Common themes and challenges arose around education, distribution of locally produced food, access to land, and a need for more farming infrastructure. Our programs works collaboratively to provide food and agriculture education, provide infrastructure and resources to encourage a year-round local food system, and close the gap on food insecurity and food waste on our island.

Sophie Mazza, IGI Community Food Waste Educator, recently visited the Windham Solid Waste Management District in Brattleboro, VT, to tour its new covered aerated static pile composting facility. She was joined by WSWMD Executive Director Bob Spencer and Andrew Horowitz and Brian Jerose of Agrilab Technologies, who designed and installed the system.

Agrilab is consulting with us on the next phase of commercial composting planning and pre-installation on MV! We’re excited to learn from successful composting programs in other communities as we work toward our goal of reducing the island’s volume of food waste by 70% by 2035.

Last week, Cape and Islands United Way brought together volunteers from CIUW and MV Insurance to glean at the farm!

Each October, CIUW organizes their annual Day of Action, gathering volunteers to support projects across the Cape and Islands. We’re grateful for their partnership, both in the field and through their annual $20,000 contribution to our Community Lunch Program!

It’s Farm to School Month! We’re looking back on the momentous day when IGI team members stood alongside advocates from across the state as the Governor officially declared Farm to School Month 👏

Since 2007, we’ve worked with students across the Island to help them grow food, save seeds, cook nourishing meals, and understand where their food comes from. We’re proud to be part of a movement that brings these hands-on learning experiences to kids!

It was a pleasure to host Isaac Basibe, Agriculture Specialist at the Nantucket Land Bank , and Cosimo and Katrina who work at Aidan Feeney at Sustainable Nantucket . There is so much to learn from each other about regenerative farming practices, venison processing and distribution, delivering local food to schools, and building a climate resilient, food secure island.
