Island Grown

Island Grown Our mission is to build a regenerative and equitable food system with the Martha’s Vineyard community We are a community non-profit on Martha’s Vineyard.

In 2006 a group of farmers, grocers, feed store owners, cooks, food writers, educators and parents came together to address issues in our food system. Common themes and challenges arose around education, distribution of locally produced food, access to land, and a need for more farming infrastructure. Our programs works collaboratively to provide food and agriculture education, provide infrastruct

ure and resources to encourage a year-round local food system, and close the gap on food insecurity and food waste on our island.

Celebrating the incredible momentum around food waste solutions in our Island schools!

📸 1: The Charter School’s food waste recycler with Scott Goldin (Assistant Head of School), Sam Greene (IGI Gardening Educator), Auggie and Christian (amazing student program leaders), and Sophie (Community Food Waste Director), who have been working together to pioneer this food waste solution on their campus.

📸 2: An awesome all-school assembly at the Chilmark School introducing their new recycler! Students asked thoughtful questions and learned how they’ll help measure the food waste they divert each day. Sophie also shared a video of Charter School students speaking about their recycler.

So proud to see students inspiring students across schools and ages!

Sophie and Noli had a great time at the ReFed Food Waste Solutions Summit! They got to connect with food waste heroes from across the country & bring home fresh ideas, inspiration and new connections to help strengthen our food waste work on the Vineyard.

Three cheers for our friends Betsy and Jesse Fink, who launched the work behind ReFED 10 years ago!

Delivering our first order of northeast grown food from regional farms to Edgartown School!!

We're starting to aggregate from local farms both on- and off-island to make it easier for island schools to purchase local food. Our gleaning program will continue to deliver volunteer-harvested surplus produce donated by farm partners.

Now, this new project will also support local farms with year-round sales and strengthen the farm to school supply chain.

Thanks to Edgartown cafeteria director Gina Debettencourt and the Kendall Foundation 's Food Vision Prize for supporting our local food for schools program!
