Mark your calendars! 🗓️

We are excited to announce the date of our Fifth Annual Long Point Wildlife Refuge BioBlitz!

Hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Atlas of Life and The Trustees - Martha's Vineyard, please join us from Friday June 26th - Saturday June 27th for this community science event. This BioBlitz aims to record sightings of wildlife active both during the day and at night over a 24-hour period.

Come explore the Long Point Wildlife Refuge and share your sightings on iNaturalist. There are many different events to attend on Friday and Saturday, or folks can go off on their own!

🐛🦋🪲 Friday: Attend an iNaturalist 101 session, join us for a family-friendly Moth Ball, and stay late to see nocturnal insects under blacklight. The Moth Ball will include crafts, an insect-themed costume contest, and attendees will get to meet a moth expert who will have caterpillars on display. Moth enthusiasts are encouraged to stay late to see nocturnal insects under blacklight.

🐚🌿🐟 Saturday: attend various guided daytime wildlife walks, and more, all while logging sightings of different species.

All events are free but registration is encouraged to receive relevant updates. Follow the link in our bio for more information and to register! Please also download the iNaturalist app 📱 to log your wildlife sightings.

Our Natural Neighbors program has steadily grown over the years, and we have learned a lot throughout the journey. This winter we asked our Natural Neighbors to provide feedback so we can improve our approach moving forward.

Learn about what our participants had to say about what this program has done, and what we plan to do in the future in Natural Neighbors Program Director, Rich Couse's, blog post. Read more using this link: https://biodiversityworksmv.org/lessons-from-a-natural-neighbors-community/

Our Wildlife Technician Silas has been leading a Wildlife Explorers program with the 4-H Club. In this program, club members are introduced to the field of wildlife biology, using common field techniques to gain hands-on experiences in the field and interact with wildlife. Over the last few months, the club has met to learn about camera trapping, s**t sampling, turtle trapping, radio tracking, and more.

For this World Otter Day we wanted to highlight the camera trapping and s**t sampling findings from this year. Several game cameras were deployed to document wildlife sightings on the Island. North American River Otters were one of the many species recorded. The Wildlife Explorers got to review this footage and saw some interesting behaviors! They also studied otter s**t to learn about what otters eat. BiodiversityWorks staff began studying the Island’s North American River Otter population back in 2009. It was great to see the Wildlife Explorers be so excited about these findings!
