As autumn continues, the challenges for our unhoused neighbors increase. With colder weather approaching, Harbor Homes MV is preparing to open the winter shelter on November 1.

We continue to meet the rising demand for shelter, healthcare access, and supportive services, guided by our mission to provide stability, dignity, and hope for our most vulnerable Islanders.

As Harbor Homes prepares to reopen our Winter Shelter at St. Andrew's in Edgartown on November 1, we're calling on our community to help provide a safe, welcoming place for our Island neighbors experiencing homelessness.

We are currently seeking volunteers for two important roles:
-Overnight Shifts: Help support shelter guests throughout the evening and overnight hours, assist staff with nighttime routines, and prepare breakfast before guests depart in the morning.
-Guest Registration: Be among the first friendly faces guests see when they arrive, helping with check-in and registration.

Every shift is an opportunity to offer warmth, dignity, and connection to someone who needs it.

The Center will serve as a hub where people experiencing homelessness or housing instability can seek shelter, connect with services, meet with our team, and take meaningful steps toward stable housing.

Housing is foundational to a stable, thriving community, and organizations like Island Housing Trust are helping make that possible on Martha’s Vineyard.

Island Housing Trust is a nonprofit Community Land Trust dedicated to creating and sustaining permanently affordable housing for Island residents. By keeping land in trust and out of speculative markets, they ensure that homes remain accessible for generations, supporting a diverse and resilient year-round community.

Since 2006, their work has provided real opportunity for hundreds of low and moderate income families, offering a path to stable housing while allowing individuals to build equity and remain rooted on the Island.

This kind of long-term, community-driven approach is essential to preserving the character and accessibility of Martha’s Vineyard for all who live and work here.

No one on Martha’s Vineyard should be unhoused.

This past winter made that reality impossible to ignore. Longer cold spells, more emergency calls, and more neighbors facing unsafe conditions brought a level of urgency we cannot overlook. For many, homelessness is not always visible. It can look like a car, a temporary couch, or a situation that changes overnight.

Harbor Homes expanded its response this winter to meet the growing need, providing shelter, outreach, and support to individuals and families with nowhere else to turn. The work continues, and the need has not gone away.

Support helps ensure that when someone reaches out, there is still a place to go and a team ready to respond.
