🔩 Small Tools, Big Skills! 🪛

In Montessori, even a simple screwdriver becomes a powerful tool for learning! Through twisting, turning, and fastening, children practice fine motor coordination, strengthen hand muscles, and develop hand-eye coordination.

Practical Life lessons like this also nurture concentration, patience, problem-solving, and independence. Each turn of the screwdriver builds confidence as children discover what their hands can do!

At VMS, everyday tasks become meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and say, “I can do it myself!” 💚

Our Montessori children are embracing the season while building real-life skills through 𝐩𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠!

With a pumpkin, brush, water, and sponge, children practice purposeful movements as they scrub away dirt and gently dry their work. What looks like a simple seasonal activity is actually supporting 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

Through stacking and building, children develop so much more than towers. They strengthen coordination, concentration, problem-solving skills, balance, and perseverance. Each carefully placed block is a little lesson in patience and persistence—and every successful build brings a sense of “I did it!”

Our Primary children discovered the joy of turning an outside wall into a canvas! 🖍️ Using chalk, they created their own drawings, designs, and marks—and then used water and paintbrushes to clean the wall and prepare it for the next round of creativity. 🎨💧

This simple activity offers so much more than fun. Children are practicing fine-motor control, coordination, concentration, creativity, and independence while learning that their work can be both expressive and purposeful.

🐍🔢 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐞!

Math meets hands-on learning in the Montessori classroom! During the Counting the Snake lesson, children use Montessori bead bars to build a “snake” and practice counting, combining, and exchanging quantities as they work toward a complete set of ten.

This engaging math game helps children develop 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦—all while making math something they can touch, see, and enjoy!

Learning to Understand Conflict 🤝

As part of their Peace Project, our elementary students recently welcomed Jenna from the Martha’s Vineyard Mediation Center for an engaging discussion about what conflict is and what it can look like in everyday life at school.

Students shared their own examples of situations that might create conflict, helping them recognize that disagreements are a natural part of being in a community. Together, they explored how identifying conflict is an important first step toward understanding different perspectives, communicating thoughtfully, and working toward peaceful solutions.

We’re grateful to Jenna and the MV Mediation Center for helping our students build the skills they need to navigate relationships with empathy, respect, and confidence. 💛

A simple activity with meaningful purpose! 🪞💧

In this Montessori Practical Life lesson, children learn to clean a glass surface using a small spray bottle with water and vinegar, a cloth, and a squeegee. With materials carefully sized for little hands, children can independently complete each step of the work, from spraying and wiping to leaving the surface sparkling clean.

When children are given the opportunity to care for their environment, everyday tasks become opportunities for learning, “𝐼 𝑐𝘢𝑛 𝑑𝘰 𝘪𝑡 𝑚𝘺𝑠𝘦𝑙𝘧!” 💛
