Today is the first day of hunting season. Manuel F. Correllus State Forest and many properties allow hunting, as do several of the island's nonprofit conservation groups. Use the "no hunting" filter on the TrailsMV app to find properties that don't allow hunting.

Other safety tips:
• Check beforehand to see if hunting is allowed where you're headed.
• Wear blaze orange or other bright color so you're more visible.
• Keep dogs leashed at all times.
• Avoid walking at dawn and dusk when visibility is low and animal activity increases (making those times of day popular for hunting).

Archery season: Oct. 7 - Nov. 30
Shotgun season: Dec. 2-14
Primitive fi****ms season: Dec. 16-31

Hunting is NOT allowed anywhere in Massachusetts on Sundays. Stay safe while enjoying the island's trails!

A misty morning at The Brickyard, part of Menemsha Hills Reservation in Chilmark, feels like stepping back in time.

The Trustees' history of the area reveals that the north shore’s rocky landscape was a perfect fit for 19th-century brick-making. In the 1860s, under the ownership of Boston banker Nathaniel Harris, the Chilmark brick business hit its stride. Workers mined clay from the soil, used island-harvested trees and the waters of Roaring Brook to power the operation, and shipped as many as 800,000 bricks a year aboard schooners docked in Vineyard Sound. Before railroads rendered the brickworks obsolete, construction projects from Boston to Newport to New York used bricks made in Chilmark.

Today you can see the 45-foot brick chimney, hand-cut stone foundations and walls, a water wheel, and other artifacts from the brick-making operation. Stay to the marked trails and respect the fragility of this historic site.

And plan ahead: like many island conservation lands at the height of summer, ticks and poison ivy abound. We suggest wearing long pants and tick protection. Also be advised: the trail follows uneven terrain on the way down, followed by a strenuous uphill hike on the way back.
