🤡🤔 Did you know?🤔🤡
Meet “Happy” Kellems — The Clown Who Brought More Than Laughter
November, 1952. The lights were bright, the circus was in town, and nearly 1,600 children were about to enjoy a very special day at the Hadi Shrine Circus.
Among them was a familiar face—“Happy” Kellems. 🤡
With his clown makeup, a pocket full of popcorn, and a heart for children, Happy made his way through the crowd, handing out treats and, no doubt, plenty of smiles along the way. 🍿
But Happy Kellems was much more than a circus clown.
For years, he was a familiar figure around Evansville and at the Hadi Shrine Circus. He entertained generations of families and took part in community events, but it was his work with children that made his presence especially meaningful.
In 1952, when children who might not otherwise have had the opportunity were welcomed to the circus, Happy was there to make sure they felt like part of the celebration.
And that's perhaps what made a clown like Happy so special.
The laughter may have lasted only a few minutes — but the memory could last a lifetime.
Happy Kellems had a saying that seems to tell his story perfectly:
“Laugh as long as you live; Live as long as you laugh.”
Decades have passed since that November afternoon. The popcorn is long gone, the circus tent has come down, and those children have grown old.
But somewhere in the memories of Evansville, there was once a clown named Happy who handed a child a bag of popcorn, shared a laugh, and made an ordinary day feel a little more magical. ❤️
That's the kind of history worth remembering.
🎪 Happy Kellems wasn't simply part of the Hadi Shrine Circus. He was part of the heart of it.🫶
What memories do you still hold?
