The History of Bayou Chicot Lodge 430

The settlement of Bayou Chicot is one of the oldest English speaking settlements west of the Mississippi River. According to Paxton’s History of Louisiana Baptists, The Mississippi Baptists Association sent Moses Hadley and Lawrence Scarbourgh to Opelousas in Louisiana to ordain Joseph Willis, who was the first Baptist preacher west of the Mississippi River.

Landry Parish, they constituted a church on Nov. 13, 1812, and called it Calvary Baptist Church. It was the first Baptist Church in Louisiana and also west of the Mississippi River. Part of the Northwest became Evangeline Parish. In 1948, a group of masons in the area decided to form a Masonic Lodge. An Order Of Dispensation was issued by, The Grand Lodge of Louisiana, June 10, 1948. The first meeting on record was held at the 7th grade school room at Bayou Chicot Grammar School, which has since been torn down. Records show that 19 meetings were held from June 21st. The lot size is 100’ X 150’ and is located ¾ mile North of Bayou Chicot, La. on Hwy 167. Time and weather has taken its toll on the building. The year 1985 the members voted to assess each member and erect a new building. Each member was assessed $450.00 the assessment had to be paid out in ten years. The new building was completed November 2, 1986. While the new building was being constructed the Lodge held their meetings at ST. Landry Baptist Church. Most members donated their assessments up front, and some donations were received by other lodges. Most of the labor was done by the members. The Lodge was debt free at the completion of the building, and still is debt free. All assessments have been paid off, the Lodge remains debt free. We meet on the 2nd and 4th of every month.

THE SILENT SUMMONS
A member of a certain Lodge, who previously attended meetings regularly, stopped going. After a few months, the Worshipful Master decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening, and the Worshipful Master found his brother at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire.
Guessing the reason for the Worshipful Master's visit, the brother welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The Worshipful Master made himself comfortable, but said nothing.

In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After several minutes, the Worshipful Master took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth, all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

His host watched all of this in quiet contemplation. As the one, lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow, and its fire was no more. Soon, it was cold and dead.

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The Worshipful Master glanced at his watch and chose this time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember, and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately, it began to glow once more, with all the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the Worshipful Master reached the door to leave, his host said, with a tear running down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your fiery summons, my brother. I'll be back in our Lodge next meeting."
