Vietnam-Nguyen Xuan Quynh VinceWill Foundation We educate fatherless children in the Province of Bac Ninh, Vietnam. Grimm and Kratz were on a tour that included Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Vince Grimm and Will Kratz of Cape May County, New Jersey, visited Vietnam as tourists in 2000, and ended up making friends with their tour guide. The connection they made led to an educational foundation supporting fatherless children in a country over 8,000 miles away. Grimm, who had spent two years in Korea during the Korean conflict , and had visited Japan, said East Asia fascinated him. He sa

id he and Kratz decided to take a tour of the three Southeast Asian countries, starting in Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) in the south and working their way north. Along the way, Grimm and Kratz got to know their tour guide, Nguyen Yuan Quynh, who Grimm calls Quynh (Quinn). Once in the north, Quynh invited the pair to his home to meet his family and to show him around, taking them off the established tour routes. As the tour was ending, Grimm asked if there was a chance they could meet again if the American men returned to Vietnam. They kept in touch and the following year Grimm and Kratz returned for six weeks and took on Quynh as their tour guide. This time they visited a small village called Lim in Bac Ninh Province, located about an hour outside Hanoi. Quynh’s mother was setting to retire as a school principal, and she told the men about a real problem in the area – fatherless children. According to Grimm, once a father dies the family has virtually no means of support. He said widowed mothers have few options to work other than going into the rice paddies, where they have to deal with snakes, mosquitoes, and with developing arthritis from the back-breaking work.

“It’s a very difficult life,” Grimm said. “And a lot of the time they don’t make enough to send their kids to school.”

Grimm and Kratz wanted to start an educational foundation to help keep the kids of Lim in school. With Quynh’s help they found out what they needed to do, including being interviewed by local politicians.

“In the meantime, Quynh’s father died,” Grimm said. Grimm said they wanted to name the foundation after Quynh’s father, which baffled the local authorities.

“They said, ‘Why would you name it after someone who was dead?’” Grimm said. With Quynh’s help throughout the process, including translating all the documents,” they set up the foundation on the Vietnam side. Grimm said they approached the Internal Revenue Service about setting up a 501c3 in the United States.

“We were the only foundation set up by the IRS without using a lawyer,” Grimm said. “The IRS guided us through everything.”

In 2006, the Nguyen Yuan Quynh-VinceWill Education Foundation was established. Grimm said they visit Vietnam every other year now, visiting the foundation which sponsors 21 children. Grimm said no money goes to the children – they receive school supplies, school jackets, and a small tax that is paid to the district. He said the exception to the no-money policy is when kids are at the top of their class, when they get “a couple dollars” as a reward.

“We had a couple kids get scholarships to university,” Grimm said. Grimm is president of the foundation, Kratz vice-president, and Quynh vice president of operations in Vietnam. They keep in touch electronically, and Grimm said plans are being made to continue the foundation after they are gone.

“Our estate will be part of the foundation,” he said.

Vince and Craig returned from Vietnam on Dec. 18, 2024. Much was accomplished on this visit.

Vince ,Craig and Quynh met with the secondary and primary school administrators. They requested more portable basketball courts for the school yard. They also want to institute a rewards program for excellent students…. And teachers. This will be the first time we will be assisting teachers directly. These incentives will encourage good teaching practices. Quynh’s will meet with the headmasters and decide on monetary amounts.

A meeting was held with the director of the blind people’s center in BacNinh. We will assist financially with the administration of several programs. Also we will replace the common bathroom as it is in poor condition.

On this trip we welcomed LUONG MANH HUNG, as the newest member of our team. He will act as a field representative for the charity. He will work in coordination with Quynh as we expand our services. He has a background in Social Work which will be very helpful in our mission.

Currently we have 7 students in university that we support with tuition and basic needs. We are currently seeking students with vision problems and will help them to further their education.

We can only do this with your continued support. Your US dollar goes very far in helping students and families in Vietnam. Please continue to help make future friends for America.

Roofs were lifted and homes damaged. In Hanoi over 2800 trees were uprooted and over 3000 homes damaged. Outside of Hanoi landslides and devastated whole villages.

Our friends are safe but the families have suffered damage to their homes. We need to offer our help.

Please go to Vietnamnews.com for pictures and more on this human tragedy. Your contributions now will help our families to recover. Please donate now to the foundation. You can use PayPal.

We will be returning in November to continue our work with the fatherless children, the blind and our orphans .
