In the Bible, the phrase “Be the light” comes from Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount — specifically Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV):
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand,
and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
1. Reflecting God’s Character:
To “be the light” means to reflect God’s goodness, truth, love, and grace in the world. Just as light reveals and guides, your life should show others the way toward God through kindness, compassion, and integrity.
2. Spreading Hope in Darkness:
Light represents hope, purity, and truth, while darkness symbolizes sin, despair, and confusion. Being the light means bringing hope and truth to those struggling in darkness.
3. Living as an Example:
Your actions — not just words — should illuminate God’s presence. When you love, serve, and forgive others, you shine His light.
4. Purpose and Visibility:
Just as a lamp is meant to be seen, believers are meant to stand out — not for personal glory, but to draw attention to God’s love and goodness.
So when someone says “Be the Light,” it’s a call to live in a way that inspires others, uplifts the broken, and points hearts toward God. This is why on the 2nd anniversary of the death of Brianna Long, we encourage you to live out her favorite verse. As a child of god, we know she resides in heaven. God has allowed her light to continue.
