The Villa Park Lions Club is a community organization dedicated to raising funds for deaf and blind activities through various fundraising events. Although the charter dates from May 23, 1946, the history and founding
of the Villa Park Lions Club dates from 1923. The only period of inactivity in these 52 years was during the early 1940s. Re-organization occurred in 1945 and the Lions have remained
very active since that time. One outstanding activity or project was the acquisition of the land now known as "Lions Field" and the gift of this property to the Village and people of Villa Park in 1961. This action by the Villa Park Lions resulted in the formation of a Village Park Board and Recreation Dept. History reflects that in 1951 the Villa Park Lions Club voted itself the responsibility of assuming all indebtedness for land and lights that had been incurred by the old softball league. This is the land on Wildwood Drive just west of Villa Avenue. The Club also obligated itself to an annual payment of $1500.00 for light and insurance on the field in addition to the monthly mortgage payments for land and improvements. In 1955 the foresightedness of some of the members led to the Club purchasing an additional five lots for $3000.00 increasing the land area to its present 4 3/4 acres. Bleachers were eventually installed and a brick recreation building was built. The lighting system was remodeled to a 73,000 watt system which, at the time was proclaimed the best lit ball field in the Chicago area. In the span of 11 years the Villa Park Lions had raised sufficient funds to make this into an outstanding recreational facility which was fully paid for. Realizing the need for a park board in the Village to provide organized youth activities, the Villa Park Lions offered to give the land, equipment and improvements to the Village with the stipulation that a Village Park Board was to be appointed. This was agreed to and on Oct. 14, 1961, Lions Field was officially turned over to the Village and people of Villa Park.
