When I first started coaching youth soccer, I was always looking for ways to keep my kids interested and ready to learn. This is not an easy task when dealing with the little guys. Through a bit of research, I came across cool little patches that I would buy and use as rewards and as symbols of a good job. What I did not like was my inability to track the progression and development. So finally after a few years of experience tucked away and seeing amazing results on the field, I bring to my U6 Tigers a cool new Academy program. Once a child has demonstrated the ability to perform a task on their player board, he or she will receive a sport decal to proudly place on it. It is up to the coach to find the right time to present each award, but a 5 minute ceremony before or after practice is recommended. A decal should only be awarded once that player fully grasps the challenges in each category. This program will assist players, parents and families to track the important fundamental building blocks a youth player should have in order to move on to higher levels of play. It also allows that player to feel that important feeling of success! Once the board is complete, each player will receive a graduation certificate and award. If a player is lacking in a certain area, it is up to the parents and coach to come up with a strategy to offer more opportunities for that player to develop that specific skill.
