A teacher does not need to become an investigator to help protect a child online.

They can be the adult a student feels safe going to when a conversation becomes uncomfortable, someone asks for something inappropriate, or an interaction starts to feel wrong.

That response matters.

Listen without judgment. Take the concern seriously. Help the child reach the right support.

On World Teachers’ Day, we’re recognizing a part of education that does not always happen at the front of the classroom: building enough trust that a child knows who they can turn to when something online crosses a line.

Online safety is not only about knowing what to avoid. It is also about knowing who to tell.

Operation Iron Pursuit lasted 30 days. The work behind those 30 days reached across every FBI field office in the country.

More than 200 child victims were located, and 350+ alleged offenders were arrested. In Philadelphia alone, the operation resulted in 13 arrests and at least six child victims identified.

But identifying a child is not where the work ends.

FBI Victim Services also supported victims and families through forensic interviews, referrals to support resources, and coordination with partners as cases moved forward.

Protection includes enforcement. It also includes what happens after.

In October 2024, a Cornell student went to a party at the Chi Phi fraternity house. She says she was pressured into taking substances, and that once she was incapacitated, seven members sexually assaulted her.

Cornell expelled some of them and suspended others, but no criminal charges were ever filed. For two years, that was the end of it.

This month, she sued the seven men, the fraternity, and the university. Today, after a wave of public outrage, the district attorney reopened the case and announced it will go before a grand jury.

We tell girls to watch their drinks, stay with friends, and be careful who they trust. But she wasn’t the one who needed a lesson.

So why is her safety her job?

Before asking why someone stayed, consider what made leaving unsafe.

Threats to family, debt used as leverage, and isolation can limit someone’s choices. A person may still be seen at work or in their neighborhood while being exploited.

On September 23, the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children, we’re looking beyond the familiar image of abduction.

If you’re concerned about someone, don’t confront the person you suspect. Seek guidance from a specialist anti-trafficking service. If someone shares their experience with you, listen without judgment and respect what they say they need.

Online enticement does not always begin with something that looks threatening.

A conversation may start with attention, compliments, shared interests, or a simple “like.” What matters is how the interaction changes over time, especially when it moves toward sexual conversation, requests for explicit images, money, gifts, secrecy, or pressure.

If a young person tells you something happened online, staying calm and continuing the conversation can help them take the next step.

If pressure or blackmail has already started, keep the profile and messages, report the account, and get help before paying or complying.

Being able to read for yourself means you do not always have to rely on someone else to tell you what a form, notice, message, or page says.

That matters far beyond the classroom.

Literacy gives people more direct access to information, more independence in everyday decisions, and a stronger foundation for learning and participation.

On the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, we are marking literacy for what it is: a fundamental human right.
