Today at Kiwanis, we had the pleasure of hearing from Mr. Jonathan Gordy of Gordy Enterprise, who shared about the Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby—an incredible annual event in our community!

The local track at Partin Park has been in use since 2016, when Clint Williams generously built the ramp free of charge. Since then, it has become a staple for family fun and competitive racing right here in Southeast Georgia.

Jonathan Gordy stepped into the role of Race Director in 2022 and has helped grow and support this long-standing tradition. This past Saturday marked the 34th annual local race—and it was also his final race as director, as he is stepping down from his position now that his children have gotten older.

We appreciate his time, leadership, and dedication to the program over the years! The new Race Director will be David Pickels, and we look forward to seeing the derby continue to thrive under his leadership.

One of the most special parts of the weekend is the Super Kids Race, held the day before the derby for local children with special needs. This year, they had an incredible 64 participants!

Racers compete in Masters, Stock, and Super Stock classes, and it’s all about skill, gravity, and aerodynamics—kids position themselves as low as possible in the car to gain speed down the track.

Fun fact: scenes from the movie Blue Lightning were even filmed on our very own local track!

Thank you, Mr. Gordy, for sharing your time and for all you’ve done to support this amazing community event!

Today’s Kiwanis lunch meeting was a great one! We had the pleasure of hearing from Vidalia Regional Airport Manager, Billy Ragan, who has served as Airport Manager since 2021 and has been with the airport for 16 years.

He shared an informative update on the airport’s operations, economic impact, and exciting future projects. We also learned about the many businesses and organizations connected to the airport, including Chicken of the Sea, Trane, Southern Company, Ohoopee Match Club, and Cintas.

Some neat facts about Vidalia Regional Airport:
• It is a city-owned public airport located just 3 miles outside of town
• The airport has two runways, including one over 6,000 feet long
• It sees around 19,000 aircraft operations per year
• Originally opened in 1940, it even served as a military airfield during World War II
• Offers amenities like fuel services, pilot lounge, crew cars, and weather services for pilots

From runway improvements to new hangar development, it’s clear our local airport plays a vital role in supporting growth and opportunity in our community. We appreciate Mr. Ragan taking the time to speak with us and giving us a closer look at what’s ahead!

This past week at Kiwanis, we enjoyed hearing from Hampton Kicklighter, General Manager of Warmouth Sands Golf Course.

Hampton shared his journey from growing up in Hawkinsville—where both of his parents were teachers—to gaining experience working with the Olympics and at the country club in Dublin before being recruited to Vidalia to lead this exciting new project.

Warmouth Sands is set to bring a unique golf experience to our community, featuring 60 acres of course, 55 golf carts, and a welcoming, public atmosphere with the feel of a private club. A soft opening is planned in the next couple of weeks, beginning with the range facility, along with fun games and activities for kids and families.

While the official grand opening date is still being finalized, the team is aiming for a mid-summer launch. Be sure to follow the Warmouth Sands page in the coming weeks for updates, including membership details.

We appreciate Hampton taking the time to share this exciting development with us—Vidalia has a great addition on the way!

This past Tuesday at Kiwanis, we had the privilege of hearing from Southeastern Technical College as we recognized Linda Hairr, recipient of the Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year Award.

Instructors like Linda are making a lasting impact by teaching real-world skills that open doors for their students. Many of those students are the first in their families to attend college, and through programs like these, they are gaining confidence, building careers, and strengthening our local workforce.

We also heard from Jessica Martinez Ramos, Southeastern Technical College’s GOAL Student of the Year. Her journey began with a simple visit from Phoenix, Arizona, but quickly turned into a life-changing opportunity through the RN Bridge Program. Her story is a powerful reminder of how education can transform not just one life, but generations to come.

Thank you for sharing your stories and the incredible impact of technical education in our community!

On January 20, we were honored to have Michael Johnson speak to our Kiwanis club about the MLK Parade and the powerful impact it continues to have on our community.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The MLK celebration is truly a full weekend event, beginning with the MLK Worship Service, followed by a writing contest, community choir, and a celebration after the parade—all coming together to reflect what Dr. King’s legacy was truly about: unity, service, and love for one another.

This year’s parade showcased diverse participation, strong school representation, and an overall great turnout. Events like this encourage service, strengthen community involvement, inspire youth participation, and reinforce the importance of unity.

We encourage everyone to find a way to get involved, demonstrate service, and reflect on how we can continue to serve our community.

📍 MLK Parade
