A child does not have to be physically harmed to be affected by domestic abuse.

Living with threats, intimidation, coercive control or violence can leave a child’s brain constantly watching for danger, even during moments of apparent calm.

This can affect far more than their emotions. Sleep, concentration, learning, relationships and behaviour may all be influenced by a nervous system working hard to stay safe.

And domestic abuse is not the same as ordinary parental disagreements. It involves patterns of threatening, controlling, coercive or abusive behaviour that create fear and insecurity.

Understanding what is happening in the brain helps us recognise that some behaviours we see in children are responses to experiences they should never have had to navigate.

Children need safety, not simply the appearance of calm.
