🎶 Calling all emerging musicians! The Victoria Bach Festival is once again searching for talented young artists to join its Emerging Artists program.

Open to U.S. residents ages 16 to 30, the program gives selected vocalists and instrumentalists the opportunity to perform in recital during Festival week, participate in outreach concerts throughout the Victoria community, and connect with fellow musicians and Festival artists. ✨

What makes four notes sound so haunting? 👻🎶

The Dies Irae, Latin for “Day of Wrath,” began as a medieval chant associated with the Mass for the Dead. Its melody follows a simple descending pattern, giving it a naturally dark, unsettled quality.

But part of what makes it feel so ominous today is centuries of association. Composers repeatedly used or referenced the melody in music connected to death, judgment, danger, and the supernatural. Over time, audiences learned to associate that distinctive musical pattern with something unsettling, even without knowing why.

That musical language eventually carried into film scores and popular culture, where echoes of the Dies Irae are still used to signal that something dark may be coming. 👀

Four notes, hundreds of years of history, and one seriously haunting reputation. 🎼

Johann Sebastian Bach didn't invent classical music, but his influence helped shape it in ways that are still felt today.

Answer: B) Bach Works Catalogue

"BWV" stands for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, which translates to Bach Works Catalogue.

Rather than organizing Bach's music by the date it was composed, the BWV catalog groups his works by musical genre. For example, you'll find organ works together, cantatas together, keyboard pieces together, and so on.

The catalog was created in 1950 by German musicologist Wolfgang Schmieder and has become the standard way musicians, scholars, and audiences identify Bach's compositions.

So the next time you see a title like Prelude in C Major, BWV 846, you'll know that the BWV number is simply its place in the official catalog of Bach's works. 🎼
