A monumental chapter in history arrived on September 2,1945 with VJ Day. Representatives of the Japanese government, along with U.S. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This significant act marked the formal end of World War II, a devastating conflict that reshaped the world and demanded extraordinary service and sacrifice.

More than 16 million Americans bravely answered the call to serve, with over 400,000 making the ultimate sacrifice. For these heroes, VJ Day represented not just victory, but the promise of returning to loved ones. To families who had endured years of uncertainty and anxiety, and communities that had held vigil, hoping for a brighter future. For many families, the waiting continued. The return of America's servicemen and women was a massive undertaking that stretched well into 1946

As we reflect on this pivotal moment, Texas VFW honors the courage of World War II Veterans who fought valiantly across the globe and remembers those who did not return home. Their sacrifices continue to resonate deeply, reminding us of the price of peace and the resilience of the human spirit.

September 2, 1945, is a testament to victory, but it is also a somber reminder of the human cost behind it. Texas VFW pays tribute to this remarkable generation that answered the call. While encouraging our fellow Veterans and our nation's citizens to carry forward the responsibility to remember their service and preserve their legacy for future generations.

🇺🇸 **SEPTEMBER — VETERAN SU***DE PREVENTION & AWARENESS MONTH** 🇺🇸

Throughout September, the **Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Alabama** joins veterans, families, communities, and organizations across our state in raising awareness about veteran su***de and reminding every veteran of one important truth:

**YOU ARE NOT ALONE.**

Behind every statistic is a person — a veteran, a battle buddy, a spouse, a parent, a son, a daughter, or a friend.

Sometimes the veteran who needs help isn't the one asking for it.

That's why this month is also a reminder to all of us: **make the call. Send the text. Knock on the door. Check on your battle buddy.**

Ask the simple question:

**“How are you doing?”**

And then take the time to listen.

For those of us in the VFW, our responsibility to one another doesn't end when the deployment ends, the uniform comes off, or military service is over. **No veteran should have to fight their battles alone.**

Throughout September, we encourage every VFW Post and every member across Alabama to reach out to fellow veterans — especially those we haven't heard from in a while.

“PAYGO requires it.” “Money goes back to the Treasury.” “32 million helped.”

NONE of those talking points are true! And none of them changes the fundamental question: Should future disabled veterans receive less just so Congress can “claim” to reduce the deficit? We say no.

🇺🇸 **August 31 – Honoring the End of Operation Iraqi Freedom** 🇺🇸

On **August 31, 2010**, the United States formally concluded **Operation Iraqi Freedom**, bringing an end to more than seven years of major combat operations in Iraq.

Today, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Alabama honors the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the service members who answered our nation's call during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Thousands of Americans served with distinction under difficult and dangerous conditions, facing uncertainty each day while carrying out their mission with professionalism and honor.

We also remember the families who stood behind them, the loved ones who waited at home, and the Gold Star Families whose sacrifices can never be repaid. While the operation officially ended, the impact of that service continues to be felt by those who served and by the nation they defended.

For many veterans, the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom marked not the end of their journey, but the beginning of a new one—returning home, reconnecting with family, and, for some, continuing to live with the visible and invisible wounds of war. Their service deserves our gratitude, our respect, and our continued support.

Today, we remember those who did not come home, honor those who did, and reaffirm our commitment to never forget the sacrifices made in defense of freedom.

To every veteran of **Operation Iraqi Freedom**:

**Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for your service.**

Protecting Veterans from predatory claims assistance "claims sharks"
◼ making sure Veterans seeking the benefits they've earned aren't exploited by unaccredited or deceptive actors.

Strengthening the military-to-civilian transition
◼ making sure Texans leaving military service have the resources and connections they need to successfully transition into civilian life.

These aren't abstract legislative issues. They're issues that can affect a Veteran's ability to navigate benefits, find resources, and build a successful life after service.
