Our names are Dayle Hawes and Stephanie McCall, and we are Consumer Advocates at SIILC. We are privileged to collaborate with the Independent Living Center in Richmond to provide Chapter 2 Vision Services in our six-county service area. Our program is designed for individuals aged 55 and older who experience significant vision loss that cannot be corrected with basic optical lenses. This includes conditions such as blindness, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, among others.
We offer a variety of items at no cost, including talking clocks, talking watches, handheld lighted magnifiers, large print calendars, cooking aids, talking blood pressure monitors, bump dots, and even fun items like playing cards and bingo cards. These resources help our consumers live independently.
Additionally, we provide CCTV devices, Ruby magnifiers, and OrCam readers, which can be loaned to our consumers. Throughout the year, we conduct presentations at senior meal sites, senior living facilities, clubs, and organizations. This outreach enables us to reach a large audience quickly and promotes our Center's other services.
In addition to the Vision Program, we assist in other areas as well. We offer various assistive technology items for loan, including wheelchairs, walkers, rollators, bedside commodes, shower chairs, and canes, available for both short-term and long-term use.
We also provide information and resource services to connect individuals with local resources for housing, transportation, food pantries, job training, education, communication services, insurance, and much more.
