What a great day serving Ms. E in Bessemer with the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club and Hearts In Hands.

Her steps were falling apart, and with her back and knee problems, every trip in and out of the house felt risky. Now she has brand-new front steps, low-rise steps in the back, and security doors on both entrances.

Simple changes, but a big difference in her daily life. We’re grateful to show up with helping hands and caring hearts!

The Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club joined with Hearts In Hands to build a ramp and concrete pad for Ms. V who has Parkinson’s and must use a wheelchair. Club members, Lori Moler, Will Connor, Alan Stevens, Mike Fliegel, and Jason Sparks, worked alongside the Hearts in Hands volunteers. We also got lots of help and energy from the nine year old son of Jason Sparks. He was a real trooper.

Vestavia Recycling and Community Night Out …

The motto of Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club is Service above Self! This fall, this motto was evident when Rotary Club members volunteered at the Vestavia Recycling Day. The members served as information and traffic control to help Vestavia residents quickly drop off their paper and electronic items and to find the way to any other drop-off points.

Community Night Out provided another opportunity for members to serve the Vestavia community. The grill was ignited early that day by club president, Stephen Castleberry, as he grilled ribs for the First Responders and Boston Butts to make BBQ sandwiches to serve during the celebration. In addition, he brought a large grill for fellow members to grill 600 Hot Dogs to serve with the 275 pulled-pork sandwiches. More than half of the club members helped with the grilling, the wrapping of hot dogs, the wrapping of BBQ sandwiches, and the serving of everything.

The Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club members welcomed Dr. Charles Mason to its meeting on Thursday. He presented and led a discussion on techniques of the development of leadership skills. His focus was on "Leading Questions - Becoming a Better Leader Through the Skillful Use of Questions". He shared with members copies of his book with the same title. He encouraged members to consider using the opportunity to learn more about a potential candidate through in-depth questions. Members were appreciative of his contribution.

In addition to Dr. Mason, the club members inducted our newest member, Shane Alexander. We are looking forward to building the new relationship and learning about his role in the greater Birmingham metro area.

The Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club partnered with Hearts In Hands to build a 35 foot ramp for a sweet 93 year old lady this morning.

Special thanks to members John Henley, Lori Moler, Sallie Bryant, Robert Russell, Shannon Pike, Alan Stevens, and Will Connor. We had others who wanted to come but had prior commitments. we were true to our motto of Service above Self. The Hearts in Hands crew was outstanding.

We look forward to our next collaborative adventure.

It was the pleasure of the members of the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club to welcome Sam Gaston, the city manager of Mountain Brook, as our guest speaker. The club welcomes the opportunity to connect with our neighbors.

Mountain Brook is the first city in our area to have a City Manager involved in the leadership and decision-making process. Sam shared that professionalism in city government was a need that required improvement. He spoke of the challenge of encouraging the involvement of good, qualified candidates. He believes that good management of city affairs needs to be lean with a realistic balance of mean. Tough decisions will not please everyone.

The City Manager's approach has many municipalities looking to changing their local government structure. The club members appreciated also the sharing of decisions made through the years when Mountain Brook had looked at possible expansion.

Members of the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club welcomed the owners of a new Vestavia business to their meeting on May 22. Brian and Jacob King joined the meeting to share information about Mark’s Mart Vestavia. One of their goals is to create an easy country store feel. It is a family business focusing on care and preparation. In addition to their regular stock of quality meats, customers can place special orders and enjoy incredible sides. They also offer their trademarked Chicken Swirl. Ready-to-Go meals are available at lunchtime. The personable owners are committed to providing quality food and service to Vestavia at 2501 Rocky Ridge Road.

The Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club members were excited to host their annual First Responders Event on Saturday. As with so many events and celebrations, with all of the planning, changes had to be made. With wind and rain, this year’s event had to move inside. The only ones to brave the rain and wind were the cooks and meal prep members. It was still a grand day of celebration to thank the members of the Vestavia Hills Police Department and the Vestavia Hills Fire Department and their families for serving the community. Additional thanks goes out to club members who volunteered: John Henley, Lori Moler, Stephen Castleberry, Jeff Downes, Marvin Green, Shane Ware, Shannon Pike, Margaret Cook, Charley Long, Chuck King, Robert Russell, Ed Reisinger, Michael Fliegel, Alan Stevens, Steve Ammons, Alli Ammons, Jacob Pugh, Bob Wadhams, and Conrad Garrison. So many others worked in anticipation of the event. “Service above Self” was officially the motto of the day.

Congratulations to Lori Moler on her being named "Rotarian of the Year" for Rotary District 6860. The recognition is well-deserved for such a wonderful Rotarian with the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club. The award was presented at the Multi-District Conference in Chattanooga. Below is the criteria used to nominate for the award.

The Tom Milford Service Above Self Award is awarded annually at the District 6860 conference. The award recognizes a District 6860 Rotarian who has exemplified "Service Above Self" during the Rotary year.

Nominees will be considered on the following basis:

Evidence of Service above Self (40%) – Describe what you think this individual has done that qualifies him/her for this award.

Community Service (20%) – Contributions to the community for the last 5 years over and above services for which one is paid. This should include service awards and recognition, impact on improving the quality of life for others, and acts of compassion, empathy and volunteerism.

Role Model for other Rotarians (20%) – Character, strong ethics, and actions that have benefitted others.

Legacy to the Community (20%) – Leaving a lasting impact on the community which survives the individual through service to others.
