April Save the Y Update
Hello friends of the Versailles YMCA,
Spring is here, the Y is five months in, things are good, but we’re starting to feel the summer slump.
_Memberships_
When we last wrote in late February, the Y had 396 paying memberships. As of late March, that number is 428. Total membership across all categories now covers 1,500 community members!
The trajectory since reopening:
• December (reopening): 264
• Early February: 357
• Late February: 396
• Late March: 428
However, as of mid April, we are still sitting at 428 memberships, with quite a few cancellations this month. Most of these are folks who like to cancel during the summer months, and return in the fall. While there is no problem with this, sustained membership is the only way to guarantee the Versailles YMCA is able to be a going endeavor. Even if you may not use the Y as much during the summer months, consider keeping your membership if nothing else to help us on our path to sustainability.
We still believe our safe breakeven number is 700 paying membership units, so we're past the half way mark, but with flat growth we don’t know when we can hit that. But 7 months ago this building was closed permanently, so we’re still ahead!
Corporate memberships continue to be one of the biggest growth drivers — we now have 11 corporate partners, including ARCH Cutting Tools, Bradford Schools, Village of Versailles, Family Health, King's Command, Weaver Eggs, Phelan Insurance, Russia Schools, Versailles Savings and Loan, Superior Aluminum, and Versailles Schools. Corporate membership allows your employees to pay for their membership at a discounted rate through payroll deduction, and the burden on your business is low. If your business isn't on that list yet, contact Josh Haynes at [email protected] to set up payroll-deduct memberships for your team.
_Programs_
The Y is getting busier every month.
Aquatics: We're hiring three more swim instructors to keep up with demand. Swim clinics focused on competitive swimming are running now, and the summer swim team will be renting the pool for tryouts on May 4th.
Youth Sports: Spring flag football is underway with five teams across three age groups. Ten-week seasons with Saturday morning games. Summer camps are being planned for volleyball, basketball, and pickleball.
Wellness: New classes keep getting added: belly dancing, salsa, rebound, and cardio drumming. A "6 Weeks to Summer" adult program and "Glow Up" teen program are coming. There is an adult nerf night on May 7th, “Muffins with Mom” on May 9th, and “Donuts with Dad” on June 20th. See the full schedule of events here: https://tinyurl.com/yh3rkee6
Kids & Families: We are in the process of converting the old day care room into the "new" child watch room and it's well on it's way. Thanks to everyone who donated items.
_Finances_
The Versailles YMCA continues to run a deficit, as expected with membership numbers as they are in the mid-400s. Rough numbers are that the YMCA is bringing in $31k/mo in membership revenue, with about $50k/mo in expenses, in March, netting a deficit of $20k/mo. This was budgeted for in our fundraising campaign, understanding we’ll need some operating cushion to bridge through to sustainability. This just emphasises the importance of continuing to grow our membership base. Our memberships cover about 1,500 people, while the population of just the Versailles school district is closer to 6,000, so there are plenty more people to bring into the YMCA community.
_Fundraising_
We've raised $1.25 million of our $2 million goal. The silent lobby auction in March raised $740 — thank you to everyone who bid.
The biggest update is that we’re in the process of replacing the HVAC units in the gym and the pool, including adding air conditioning to the gym! A much needed improvement.
Coming up: the Poultry Days 50/50 Raffle — the Poultry Days committee is partnering with Save the Y, with half the proceeds going to the campaign. Tickets are $10 and will be available online and in person. You can buy tickets online here: https://tinyurl.com/5b6szh2m
We're also finalizing the donor wall at the facility to recognize everyone who has contributed. More details soon.
_What's Next_
The best way to support the Y is still the simplest: sign up for a membership, tell your neighbors, and keep showing up. Five months in, this place is alive and getting stronger. Let's keep it going.
