Thank you to Huntertown descendant Marvin Rogers Sr. for sharing this photo of his grandparents, Hiawatha and Mae Burl Rogers who lived off "the first lane" in Huntertown for many years. Marvin Rogers sent this note with the photo:
"My Grandparents Hiawatha and Mae Burl Rogers were a staple in the Huntertown community. I remember my grandfather made the newspaper when he was building a house for someone in Huntertown. I would spend my summers with them and it was fun walking the dirt roads, playing with Joey and Gil (Carr), stopping by to see Nettie and Buck (Lyles) and all the families going down the lane. 🫶🏿"
It's always a blessing to hear from former residents and descendants. Thank you to Marvin Rogers, Sr for sending us your memories and this wonderful photo! ❤️
We hope to see you at the park someday soon!

If you remember Hiawatha and Mae Burl Rogers, please feel free to share your memories in the comments!

Please take time to watch this incredible The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation De Tour on the Elm Bend Community and The Monuments Workshop. Elm Bend was an African American hamlet in southern Woodford County, part of the Honoring Our Black Heritage stories and our shared history. HCIP is proud to partner with The Monuments Workshop in working to save and honor historic home places and spaces, including the Huntertown community. Kudos to Kayla Bush and Lynn Pruett for this project and continued research to honor and preserve these stories.

Tune in for our final Virtual deTour of the 2026 season as we explore the history and remnants of Elm Bend, a rural community in southern Woodford County tha...

Who better to highlight for Women's History Month than Alice Dunnigan, a groundbreaking journalist and the first African American woman to sit in the U.S. Capitol Press Gallery. Her statue stands outside the SEEK museum in Russellville, Kentucky. A stop on the national Civil Rights rail, the museum chronicles the “unique and buried stories about slavery and the related struggles for freedom, equality, and justice.” https://seekmuseum.org/

SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF RELIEF CEMETERY is Midway's oldest and is located adjacent to the Midway Cemetery. Sons and Daughters, an historic African-American cemetery, is the final resting place of many notable Midwegians and is a special place to remember Midway's history as a segregated community and the remarkable contributions of the Black community to Midway and Woodford County.
