Friends Of The Middle River is a group of citizens taking action to promote stewardship and enjoyment of the Middle River Watershed through monitoring, cleanups, education, float trips, and our River Access Program.

For those of you who may be new to FriendsFest, it is our annual celebration of the Middle River and you, the Friends of the Middle River! During the picnic, we will draw the winning raffle tickets. Two lucky folks will leave with a grand prize of either a new kayak, or stand-up inflatable paddle board. There will also be many more raffle prizes drawn for those in attendance. You will have an opportunity to hear about our stewardship efforts from the past year, and any new activities in the pipeline – new volunteer opportunities with FOMR are always available.

Bring: A side dish, drinks, plates, cups and utensils. Plus a chair or blanket.

Wow, we have had a banner Middle River cleanup month! On August 8th, several groups of volunteers collected a total of 73 tires. Then, during our 2nd cleanup day this past Thursday, August 20th, volunteers traversed a less-commonly floated section of the river and collected over 200 tires! Huge thank you to all of our volunteers for pulling off such an excellent cleanup in 2026 and for helping us keep our Middle River clean!

Special thanks for our August 20th Cleanup go to Phillip Raines and the Timmons Group team, Gib Lewis and the Augusta County VA - Government Team, New Hope Ruritans for a gathering space, Steve Talley for sponsoring Thursday's breakfast, and New Hope Grocery for making said breakfast!

Instead of our regularly scheduled monthly float trip for August, we have designated Saturday, August 8th as the 2026 FOMR Cleanup Day.

We have already scouted out several sites that are in need of a clean up.

This past Saturday, July 11th, twelve paddlers joined float leader Greg Pflug for a trip along the Middle River! The group forded rapids, spotted wildlife, and enjoyed the fact that water levels were finally high enough for us to float closer to home this month. Check out the third photo to see if you can spot the river otter seen by Saturday's paddlers!
