Great video by Ralph White on splitting a top bar hive. Splitting a hive is to catch the swarm before it happens!

The beehives have been crazy this year. The top bars hives are exploding with bees. This is a simple way to split the top bar hive.

While the hive in this video is not a traditional top bar hive, (horizontal Langstroth) it is interesting that more and more beekeepers are moving into horizontal designs. Most commercial beekeepers are not going to move away from Langstroth hives anytime soon due, to moving a lot of hives around the county to pollinate many different crops. No matter what box they are in, we are just happy they have a home!

Today I am adding a Queen excluder to my horizontal hives. The queen has been moving back and forth and I have brood in frames I want to extract. ...

Here is a great video on a top bar hive that has survived for a very long time; in fact, it has not been opened for 14 years. One thing to note as the frames are being removed is how the bees over the 14 years, arranged the comb in the hive. The entrance is on the end of the hive. The brood is close to the entrance and the honey stores are at the opposite end.

Here is a nice video on a Keyan top bar hive. The entry Hole on this hive is in the side of the hive in the middle, opposite the side the beekeeper is on. There is honey built out on both side of the brood comb. If the hole was on the end, the brood would be new the hole and the honey combs would be on the back side of the brood. Notice where in the hive he is finding harvest-able honey.

We started this Kenyan Top Bar Hive colony from a swarm we caught in early spring (September here in Australia) and it was full of harvestable honey by mid-J...
