In this , we're starting with the simplest step: connection. Get down on your child's level, follow their lead, and show interest in what they're doing.

No elaborate activities required. Sometimes, a few minutes of being fully present can make all the difference.

A day of fun, books, and community!

We had a wonderful time at the City of Sebastian’s Kids Fest, where the Moonshot Reading Rocket made a stop, and our team spent the day connecting with families, sharing literacy resources, and handing out free books to young readers.

We were also excited to have six Girl Scouts from Troop 51006 volunteering alongside us! The troop, made up of Juniors and Cadettes, has chosen to focus on “A Year of Community Service” and partnered with The Learning Alliance to help put more books into the hands of children across our community.

Their service with The Learning Alliance will extend well beyond Kids Fest. Throughout the year, the girls will help distribute books through Little Lending Libraries, have purchased books for Moonshot Families to gift during the holiday season, and volunteer at community events like this one. Some troop members are also using their service to work toward their Bronze or Silver Award Pins.

We’re so grateful for these young volunteers and their commitment to giving back. Thank you, Troop 51006, for helping us put more books into the hands of young readers and supporting our work toward the Moonshot Goal: 90% of students reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

September was all about celebrating what makes each child and family special.

Our Moonshot Families explored All About Me, My Family, and My Culture through books, conversations, family trees, special items from home, music, food, and cultural activities.

We talked about the things that make us unique while celebrating the many different families and traditions that make our community so special.

What a wonderful way to learn, connect, and grow together.

What could Amendment 3 mean for Indian River County?

County Administrator John Titkanich will discuss the proposal, local property taxes, estimated financial impacts, and potential implications for County services and future budgets.

The forum is focused on providing factual, nonpartisan information about what is known, what is estimated, and what has not yet been decided.

The ABCs of IRC are coming to life!

What started as a community idea is now becoming something families can see, explore, and use together.

Vero News recently joined MCAN leaders and educators at the FPL Bright Spot Playland as we celebrated the installation of the first ABCs of IRC banners. Each letter connects children to the people, places, and experiences that make Indian River County special, while QR codes give families simple, play-based ways to build language and early literacy skills together.

The ABCs of IRC are one more way our community is making literacy visible beyond the classroom and creating opportunities for young children to talk, play, learn, and grow.

Taking the Moonshot Story beyond Indian River County.

Last week, The Learning Alliance co-founders Barbara Hammond and Liz Re*****on joined leaders from the School District of Indian River County at the Memphis Literacy Conference to share lessons from our community’s literacy journey.

Their session, “The Moonshot Story: Lessons for Practical Application in Leadership,” explored what we’ve learned about the power of a clear vision, aligned leadership, strategic use of data, and strong public-private partnerships.

The best part of sharing our story is learning alongside others. We’re grateful to the Memphis Literacy Conference for creating space for literacy leaders from across the country to connect, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.

And we’re proud to see the work happening in Indian River County become part of a larger conversation about what it takes to create meaningful, lasting change for children.

Literacy is a team sport.
