The Learning Alliance

The Learning Alliance The Learning Alliance is a nonprofit dedicated to helping children read and succeed.

We work with schools, families, and the community to improve early literacy and achieve our Moonshot Goal: 90% of students reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. The Learning Alliance, in cooperation with its community partners, is dedicated to delivering the latest advances in science-based education techniques to area teachers. Neuro-scientists are learning about the architecture of the

brain and how the brain learns to read, and we at The Learning Alliance have identified the teaching methods that best harness this new understanding. In our effort to radically improve our children’s literacy rates, we are all stakeholders. Partnerships between schools, civic youth organizations, non-profits, universities, philanthropists and parents are all critical to our success. The good news is that we all have every reason to believe that positive changes are not just possible, but that they are on the near horizon.

⚾ Swinging for the Fences

You can’t spend the day at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex without getting out on the field!

We took a break from strategic planning for some friendly competition, batting cages, and plenty of laughs. 💙

Because building a strong team means making time to connect, have fun, and cheer each other on.

We’re back at it and swinging for the fences for the children of our community! 🌙📚

And honestly, we can’t blame him. 😉

We’re SO excited to launch Moonshot Academy at our very own Moonshot School, Vero Beach Elementary School!

An incredible team of educators is ready to support our students, close literacy gaps, and help every reader reach their next level.

The ABCs of IRC are coming to life across our community!

What started as a community-led idea is creating playful opportunities for children and families to explore letters, words, and the people and places that make Indian River County special.

We’re excited to see the ABCs of IRC now on display at FPL Bright Spot Playland and in other places throughout our community. Each display is an invitation to slow down, look around, ask questions, talk, read, and learn together.

Because literacy doesn’t only happen in the classroom. It happens everywhere.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and to the community members who shared the words that make our ABCs uniquely Indian River County.

📚💗 Honoring a legacy of putting books in the hands of children.

Today, The Learning Alliance joins people around the world in remembering Dolly Parton, whose generosity, heart, and belief in the power of books touched millions of children and families.

In 1995, Dolly launched her Dolly Parton's Imagination Library with a simple but powerful vision: help children develop a lifelong love of reading by putting a book in their hands every month. Today, the program continues to gift millions of books to children from birth to age five around the world.

Her belief that every child deserves access to books is a legacy we are proud to celebrate and carry forward.

At The Learning Alliance, we believe books can open doors, spark imagination, and change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Thank you, Dolly, for helping generations of children discover what is possible when they open a book.

🌙 Crafting Our Vision

At our team retreat at the historic Jackie Robinson Training Complex, we took some time to get creative and reflect on what drives us.

Each team member designed a custom pennant representing their personal commitment to the Moonshot Goal: 90% of children reading on grade level by the end of third grade. 📚

Sharing our “why” and seeing our individual commitments come together was a powerful reminder of what makes this team special.

We’re aligned, inspired, and ready to keep moving the Moonshot forward. 🚀

Earlier this week, Dr. David K. Moore shared his decision to step down as Superintendent of the School District of Indian River County, with a target departure of June 2027. This is not a moment to dwell on an ending but rather a moment to recognize what seven years of relentless work has built: a durable, coherent, self-sustaining system that does not depend on any single leader. The District Grade climbed from 38th to 5th in Florida on the strength of four consecutive “A” ratings, and now ranked 3rd in the state for reading achievement with four schools achieving our 90% Moonshot Literacy Goal. The beliefs, expertise, and ownership behind those results live throughout the organization; in its teachers, leaders, and support staff, not in any one person. That is what makes this transition a moment of confidence rather than uncertainty. It's why The Learning Alliance's partnership with SDIRC, our commitment to the Moonshot Goal, and our work together to be a champion for early literacy, will continue undiminished. Dr. Moore has committed to remaining actively engaged through the remainder of his tenure, working closely with the Board to ensure a smooth, well-supported transition to the district's next leader.

“What is happening in Indian River County is bigger than any one leader, and that’s the whole point,” said Barbara Hammond, CEO and Co-Founder of The Learning Alliance. “David Moore didn’t just deliver seven years of extraordinary results; he built a system, a culture, and a belief in what our students can achieve that will carry this community forward for years to come. The best of this work is still ahead.”
