We had to shuffle some things around, so we will meet August 2nd at Grace Methodist Church. Until then, here are some things we’ve been working on:

Also, if you’re interested in learning to crochet, the Millport Public Library will be hosting a class later this summer! There will be a small fee, but you’ll go home with yarn and a crochet kit. So, let us know if you’re interested!

As always, if you’ve finished hats, they can be dropped at Alfa Insurance in Vernon or message me, and I’ll meet you to pick them up.

We have been STRUGGLING to find a good cotton yarn that’s has both a soft texture and beautiful colors. (Summer in the south makes acrylic a really bad choice🫣.) Eat.Sleep.Knit. has a gorgeous selection of beautifully soft cotton that you can order online!!! The staff was super nice too, and that’s always a big bonus. They answered any questions I had, and they told me where I could find the nearest coffee, which I desperately needed.

Check them out!

Summer can be the hardest time to pick a project! Sometimes I don't want all of that big woolly project in my lap, I don't know how many knit summer tops I can really wear, and I get bored with socks. Textured Farmhouse Towels is exactly the cute summer project I can get into, quick, small, portable! Crocheted in Berroco Comfort Worsted, you've got an affordable and breathable project perfect to take to the beach.

Kitty Color Picks:
9701 Ivory & 9710 Ballet Pink
9703 Barley & 9701 Ivory
9714 Robin's Egg & 9723 Turquoise

When I agreed to start this group, I had no idea how much I would come to rely on my team. I had a heartfelt conversation with Ms. Jeanne Thornton, who is responsible for the port pillow ministry at Grace Methodist Church, Vernon Alabama, and she told me, “People love to help other people. They just don’t know how sometimes.” And let me tell you…my heart has overflowed with joy as new members proudly show me their projects or gone out of their way to show me pictures of their new “yarn bags.” And as I block each hat and prep it for donation, I think fondly of each of my bees, who worked so hard to churn out the hat that I’m shaping and prepping for donation.

Brene Brown, a social researcher, has a whole body of work dedicated to how humans need connection and community. We need groups that bring us encouragement and a sense of belonging. Thanks to my team, who stepped up when I overbooked myself, we are building an amazing community of crafters.

Our hats have gone to hospitals in Winfield and Jasper, AL. They were sold to raise money for St. Jude, and again sold to raise money for a local family’s medical bills. They went to operation Christmas child, and they offered warmth, hope, and love to mothers and children at Hope’s Choice.

My bees have busily created blankets for the sick and the lonely, and they happily tell me about the Christmas presents they learned to make as a part of our group. So, if you are honored with a “bee” hat, know that it was made with the utmost care.

We now have three “official” branches in Vernon, Beaverton, and Fayette, AL, and we are slowly warming the world: one hat, one blanket, one pair of socks at a time.

We raised $150 for St. Jude!!! Now, we’re packing the leftover hats and passing them on to a medical bill fundraising team in Vernon, AL. I’m so proud of my bees and all our sponsors. You all continually amaze me with your selflessness and industry. I think Jo March would be proud.

As always, we will continue to “Hope, and keep busy.” (Louisa May Alcott)

Picture: Outdoor workspace because (1) it’s a beautiful evening, and (2) I didn’t want to carry all the stuff in if I was going to have to carry it all back out again 😂 (Also, if you’re jealous of my work tray, Billy and Sonya Price made it for me. They do incredible and beautiful work! Link to their shop in the comments.)
