Due to the amount of community engagement on our recent post, we wanted to take a minute to further clarify the situation regarding EMS transfers.
Right now, our department is responsible for handling transfers out of Wilbarger General on top of our normal 911 response. These transfers are important, and we understand they’re needed—but with our current staffing, they’re putting us in a tough position.
We are supposed to be staffed with 7 personnel per shift. In reality, we’re usually operating with about 5 due to retention issues . Vernon Fire/EMS has not been fully staffed at 7 personnel a shift in 5 years.
When a transfer comes in, 2 people are assigned to it—whether that’s an hour away or several hours away. That leaves just 3 personnel at the station to cover roughly 978 square miles and around 14,000 residents.
This isn’t something that happens once in a while—it’s a regular, daily occurrence.
To try and make up for it, callbacks are used to bring people in on their days off. But over time, that leads to burnout. Our crews are being asked to handle full shifts, frequent transfers, and then come back in on their off days. That’s not sustainable.
On top of that, our county is about to see significant growth due to an incoming data center project that will bring thousands of additional people into the area over the next few years. The demand for emergency services is only going to increase.
We want the community to know that conversations are currently happening about possible solutions—whether that’s changes to how transfers are handled or increasing staffing.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple:
To make sure when you call 911, there are enough people here to answer.
We appreciate the support and engagement from the community and will continue to keep you updated.
