🏺 Join us for our next CT Clay Guild meeting at Studio 467 🏺

We’ll kick things off with a short 20-30 minute demo by Simon Wainwright, a machinist and studio member at Studio 467, who will share how to sharpen and maintain your pottery tools! Feel free to bring tools that you have questions about—this will be a great opportunity to troubleshoot, learn, and get expert advice.

We’ll also be hosting a Tip Sharing Session. Bring your own “bag of tricks” and be ready to share! We’re inviting members to swap ideas on studio maintenance, clever pottery hacks, pro tips, and practical solutions that make studio life easier and more efficient.

Come ready to learn, share, and connect with fellow clay folks!

As always CTCG Community Meetings are pot luck style, free to attend, and open to the public. You don’t have to be a member to come to our meetings and check things out.

Animal effigies have carried symbolism, mystery, and cultural meaning for thousands of years—from the Canopic Jars of ancient Egypt to the Colima Dogs of Mesoamerica.

Join ceramic artist Candice Methe for Four Days of Hands-On Joy exploring the magic of animal effigies and vessel forms through handbuilding.

In this immersive workshop at The Alison Palmer Studio, students will work with coil, pinch, and soft slab techniques to create expressive vessels, lidded jars, and animal forms while exploring the cultural narratives behind effigy traditions. Candice’s work—praised for its primal presence and vitality—demonstrates how ancient inspiration can lead to deeply personal contemporary forms.

📅 April 4–7, 2026
⏰ 10AM–5PM
📍 South Kent, Connecticut

Hosted by our newest CT Clay Guild member studio, The Alison Palmer Studio. Follow now to stay in the loop on more upcoming workshops!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our meeting at Wesleyan Potters yesterday. It was a great evening of sharing techniques, ideas, and updates from the clay community

Our featured demonstration was led by Bri Larson , who shared her background and approach to inlay and surface illustration, offering fresh inspiration and practical insight into creating bold, expressive work.

Thank you again to Bri for sharing her knowledge, everyone at Wesleyan Potters for hosting us (especially Andrew Myer and Natalie Pittman) and to everyone who came out to learn and connect. It was a wonderful example of the supportive and curious community we’re building together.

See you all next month on April 12th at where we will learn how to sharpen and maintain our tools!

We will also be hosting a Tip Sharing Session. Bring your own “bag of tricks” and be ready to share! We’re inviting members to swap ideas on studio maintenance, clever pottery hacks, pro tips, and practical solutions that make studio life easier and more efficient.

Meet CTCG Member Ave Rivera

“Humor and joy are important factors in my work. It is easy to forget or dismiss the importance of happiness in our lives. Personifying animals in my work not only adds an element of humor, but it makes them relatable and sparks conversation. For example, my sculptural work explores feelings of anxiety and despair but because of the exaggerated expressions, I hope the audience can laugh at their expense.

For my functional work, I want the experience to be explorative and full of wonder. To lead the user, every surface is considered when developing a concept. The punch line to a joke or a morning meditation may be inscribed on the bottom of a mug, or an especially precious detail may be carved into the handle. Each piece often includes layers of sculpted and painted details using techniques such as sgraffito and mishima. Fantasy and whimsy provide a wealth of inspiration for my pottery.”

Meet CTCG Member Karen Stavolone

“I have been creating and teaching art for over 38 years. As I prepare to retire from public school teaching, I am devoting myself fully to studio practice. My work explores human relationships, economic systems, and our interaction with the surrounding landscape.

While completing my MFA thesis 28 years ago, I focused on sculpture and installation art that incorporated audience participation, recorded sound, and visual text. In later years, my practice expanded to include large paper-clay sculptures and wall installations featuring to***co leaf forms and original fired photo decals. Over the past five years, I have been creating utilitarian, functional pottery intended for everyday use and enjoyment.

Clay remains my most natural and expressive medium. Moving forward, I plan to combine my recent investigations in ceramic vessels with photo transfers to develop new work that reflects my evolving ideas and experiences.”

We’re so excited to have Bri Larson joining us for an artist demo at our upcoming community meeting on March 8, at Wesleyan Potters

Originally from Minnesota and now based here in New England, Bri is known for her wheel-thrown pottery adorned with colorful clays and hand-drawn imagery. She inlays and illustrates each piece at the bone-dry stage, allowing color and glazes to interact in ways that make every surface feel expressive and one of a kind.

During this demo, she’ll share her approach to inlay and surface illustration—offering fresh inspiration and practical insight into creating bold and expressive work.

Would 37 pharmacists or plumbers sit in a room for two hours on Super Bowl Sunday and openly talk about how much money they make (or don’t make)?

Probably not.

But 37 potters did today at in New Haven CT. Honest pricing conversations, no gatekeeping, and enough material to go another two hours.
This is why we gather.
