Our August program will be "Linked Across Oceans: Chain Migration" presented by Suzanne L. Hoffman. Join us at 7:00 pm CT, Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville, IL.

Did you ever wonder how your ancestors chose a location to move to? What was the impetus that put them in a particular spot, or in a specific geographic region as opposed to another? We are going to explore the chain migration of immigrants to northern Illinois. Who were they and why did they settle where they did? We can match ethnic groups or people from the same location and follow their settlement patterns. The Push and Pull factors unique to them and the waves of migration will be identified for each ethnicity. We will look at: Germans, Swedes, Welsh, Irish, Jews, Italians, African Americans, Polish, and others if there's time.

Suzanne is the Immediate Past President of Association of Professional Genealogists, President of the APG Forensic SIG, Chair of the Jewish Research SIG, a member of the Record Preservation and Access Coalition, President of the Illinois State Genealogical Society, Chair of its Advocacy Committee, and Parliamentarian for the Chicago Genealogical Society.

Our first program as the merged Lake County IL and Zion Genealogical Societies will be July 9, 2026, 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Joel Farkas will present " 'Painting' the American Revolution" at the Cook Park Library, 4123 N. Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville.

See the Revolution through the eyes of the artists who chronicled our nation's founding. Learn about the importance of fine arts (paintings, poems, portraits, sculptures, music, and more) during the American Revolution and how they help define our nation today. Plus, find out what "macaroni" really means in the song "Yankee Doodle".

We are co-hosting this hybrid event with the Cook Memorial Public Library District. It will also be available through Zoom.

Our March 11 meeting will be held on Zoom at 7 pm CT. Pam Vesta will present “Voting Records: Genealogy’s Best Kept Secret”.

Looking for a date of birth or death? The date and court of naturalization? Where your ancestor disappeared to, or where he came from? His political outlook? Even what kind of house he lived in? Voting records may have the answer. These often-overlooked gems can be packed with genealogical information, and you won’t believe what they can tell us about our ancestors!

Pam Vestal is a full-time genealogist and lecturer in Oregon whose research extends far beyond the Pacific Northwest, with clients all over the U.S. and research that reaches beyond our borders. From family histories to house histories, she tailors her work to the unique needs of each client, but as a professional writer, she specializes in digging into the genealogical facts to tell the ancestors’ stories. An illustrated genealogical biography makes a wonderfully personal way to honor them. Whether lecturing to professionals or newcomers to the field, she welcomes the opportunity to share what she has learned through genealogical coursework, conferences and years of on-site and online research.

Note: Registration is required. To register and get the link for the Zoom meeting, email [email protected]. LCIGS members will also will be emailed a handout.
