Silver Wheels Cycling Club Who's ready to join the ride? A Short History of Silver Wheels

Silver Wheels was begun much the same way that other organizations have been in the past.

Northeast Ohio cyclists, unite! ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Silver Wheels Cycling Club is your ultimate playground with 400+ yearly rides for all levels across Lorain, Cuyahoga, Erie, Medina & Huron Counties. A common enjoyment of cycling plus an interest in riding together with friends formed the basis of its beginnings. On April 15, 1998, a meeting was announced by founder Ed Stewart at Carlisle Visitor Center for

the purpose of discussing the possible formation of a bike club. Over 30 people showed up that first night and a core of activities were quickly put together. By the fall that year we had about 80 paid members. In the years that followed, Silver Wheels has grown in size and matured in experience to the robust organization it is today. In 2002 the board incorporated the club as a 501 C(7) non-profit organization. Over the years the club has traveled to many places. We have ridden probably every trail in the state - and there are many. Some of the locations biked include Michigan, Canada, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Ireland, and Holland. Over 70 members have completed the League of American Bicyclists Bike Education Program, taught by members who are certified instructors, a truly unique situation for a club our size. The club membership has about 300+ individuals. The age of our members ranges from the teens well into the eighties, with an average in the mid-50's; we are about even male and female. Our membership hails from all over the Northern Ohio region with representatives from eight counties, although most do live in Lorain County. We now offer many rides and events, totaling over 400 during the season. These activities are mostly rides of all types but also include our educational program, meetings, and non-cycling recreational activities. In the off-season we remain active with hikes and cross country skiing. We have rides scheduled about every day and in peak season multiple rides a day. In 2008 Silver Wheels was named Club of the Year for Region 4 by the League of American Bicyclists, one of six clubs in the country so named that year. If you are interested in adding substance to your cycling and making new friends in the process, you might want to consider joining Silver Wheels. Thank You for Making the 17th Annual Dog Days Wine Tour a Success

Thank you to all of our new and returning Dog Days Wine Tour riders for joining us this year. Although the weather forecast initially looked concerning, we were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful sunny day, a little wind, and zero rain during the event.

We also want to thank our Silver Wheels Cycling Club volunteers, Dog Days Wine Tour Chair Jose Morell, our venue host and food caterer Oberlin College, and our wonderful event partners: Matus Winery, Vermilion Valley Vineyards, Redhead Ciderhouse, Paper Moon Vineyards, and the Wakeman Elevator Pit Stop.

Your support helped make this 17th annual event a major success.

We were also excited to hear so many positive comments about the new 38-mile route, which was a big hit with many riders.

Thank you again for riding with us, supporting the event, and helping make the Dog Days Wine Tour such a special day.

Take a look at the current photo library of over 311 photos so far, more will be added as we receive them from riders.

Weather, Air Quality, and Participation Notice

The Dog Days Wine Tour 2026 is a rain or shine event and is scheduled to proceed on July 18th 2026. As of Friday morning, the Saturday forecast for Oberlin shows a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a higher chance of storms later in the day. Air quality is also forecast to improve from current smoke-related conditions, though conditions may still vary during the event. Each rider is responsible for checking current weather and air quality conditions before riding and deciding whether to participate, ride a shorter route, or not ride based on their own health, fitness level, medical conditions, and personal risk tolerance. Riders with asthma, heart or lung conditions, smoke sensitivity, or other health concerns should use extra caution and consult a medical professional if needed. As stated in our event materials, registrations are non-refundable because many event costs are paid in advance.

Happy Independence Day 250!
Today's ride was very well attended. Cycling conditions were quite nice this morning (not too hot and low traffic). The post-ride food and social time capped off this fun morning. A big thanks goes to Bob Burkhardt for organizing this annual event.

The Ride of Silence: This event is held each year by cycling organizations to honor those killed while bicycling. It also brings attention to our sport which shares the road with much larger vehicles. Silver Wheels also remembers our club members who have passed, for any reason. This year, our list now has 37 names. Bob Esper was the 2026 organizer, Steve Oz read the poem and Kathy Yourkiewicz read the name list. As Pat Habenicht played bagpipes, our riders began their 5 mile procession led by Steve Oz with a police es**rt. Thank you to our 15 riders who participated even though it was chilly and breezy.
