A message from Linda:

Thank you all so much for the kind words. Jim and I truly love Verdigre, and that love is what has driven our dedication to Kolach Days and this community over the years.

While I may have been the one in the leadership role, I certainly never did it alone. I have been incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful group of people beside me throughout the years. When I asked for help, they showed up. When something needed to be done, they jumped in and got it done. I could never have done my job without them, and I hope they know just how much their time, support, friendship, and dedication have meant to both me and this community.

It wasn’t always easy, and I know there were times when decisions had to be made that not everyone agreed with. But through it all, I tried to make those decisions with one thing in mind: what I believed was best for Verdigre and Kolach Days.

As I step away from this role, new people will bring new ideas, new energy, and their own way of doing things. But one thing I know will never change is the love people have for Verdigre and the desire to see our community and its traditions continue to thrive!

A New Approach for the Verdigre Improvement Club

As we look toward the future of the Verdigre Improvement Club, we know one thing for certain: the way we've always done things doesn't have to be the way we continue doing them.

Over the years, fewer volunteers have meant more responsibilities falling on the same small group of people. And when helping with one community event turns into helping with every event, attending every meeting, and working throughout an entire Kolach Days weekend, it's easy to understand how people get burned out.

We want to change that!

Over the next couple of meetings, the Improvement Club will be discussing a transition toward a committee-based approach to planning our community events. While nothing is set in stone yet, the idea is simple: More people doing smaller pieces.

For Kolach Days, that could mean individual committees for things like the BBQ, parade, polka dance, bars, entertainment, kids' activities and more. Larger areas could have their own smaller sub-committees, too. A kids' committee, for example, might include sub groups handling turtle races, bounce houses or other activities.

Instead of asking someone to help plan an entire weekend, we'd like to make it possible for someone to say: "I'd love to take care of this one event." And that's their piece.

The same concept will extend to Verdigre Vanoce in December, which is quickly approaching and will be one of the first events where we hope to begin putting this new approach into action.
But before we decide exactly what this structure looks like, we NEED more voices in the room.

Maybe you've been part of the Improvement Club before. Maybe you've thought about coming to a meeting but weren't sure what that meant. Maybe you've never considered yourself an "Improvement Club person" at all, but you have an idea for Kolach Days or Vanoce that you'd love to see happen.

Come! Coming to a meeting does not mean you're volunteering for anything. There are NO DUES to join the Verdigre Improvement Club. You do not have to attend every monthly meeting. You do not have to become a committee leader. And you certainly don't have to give up your entire Kolach Days weekend. Come when you can. Sit and listen. Throw out an idea. Volunteer for an hour. Help with one event. Create a committee around something you're passionate about. Or simply help us figure out how this new structure could work better. There is room for all levels of involvement!

We're at an important point in the future of events like Kolach Days. Maintaining a weekend of that size takes an incredible amount of planning and manpower. Continuing to grow it, introduce new activities and keep it exciting for future generations takes even more. We don't want the future of these traditions to depend on whether a handful of people are willing to carry an increasingly heavy load. We want to spread that load out. And hopefully, by doing that, we can also open the door to new faces, new ideas and new traditions alongside the ones we already love.

This structure isn't finalized. That's intentional. We want you to help us build it. Whether you have an entire event you'd love to take on, one hour you're willing to give, or simply an idea you'd like someone to hear, we'd love to have you at the table!

The Verdigre Improvement Club will meet next on Wednesday, September 16 @ 7:30PM at the New Fire Hall.

THANK YOU, Linda Sokol!!!!!

24 years of service on the Verdigre Improvement Club. 12 years as president. And more hours behind the scenes than we could ever begin to count.

When we started looking for photos for this post, we realized something kind of funny. For someone who has spent 24 years as a member of the Verdigre Improvement Club, including the last 12 as president, there really aren't that many pictures of Linda working Kolach Days. And the answer is pretty obvious...She's always the one running around making sure everyone else gets to enjoy it.

For most of us, Kolach Days begins when the streets start filling, the music starts playing and familiar faces start making their way back to Verdigre. For Linda, it begins months earlier. There are licenses to obtain, entertainment and vendors to book, rentals to arrange, schedules to coordinate, paperwork to complete, phone calls to make and countless little details that somehow have to come together at exactly the right time.

Then the weekend finally arrives, and while the rest of us are watching the parade, taking pictures, catching up with friends and bringing our kids from one activity to the next, there is an entirely different side of Kolach Days happening behind the scenes.

For the past 24 years, Linda has been part of making that happen. And for the past 12, she has been the person leading it.
She has taken on more than most people probably realize, usually with a can-do attitude, a laugh and a willingness to simply figure it out.

And while this post is about Linda, it would be impossible to recognize those years without recognizing Jim, too. Twenty-four years of giving your time to a community means your family gives some of theirs as well. Jim has been beside her through countless events, projects and very long Kolach Days weekends.

For the past couple of years, Linda has been ready to step away from the president role. And after all those years of experiencing Kolach Days through schedules, responsibilities, phone calls and problems that need solved, there's another way she'd really like to experience it now---as Grandma.

She has grandchildren to take to the events. Little hands to hold walking from one activity to another. Memories she'd like to be in, rather than always being somewhere behind the scenes making them possible for everyone else. And after 24 years, we think she's more than earned that!

Linda, thank you for the years, the hours, the headaches, the problem-solving, the traditions you've protected and all of the things you've done that most of us will probably never even know about.

Thank you, Jim, for sharing her with the rest of us.

Thank you both for loving this little community enough to give so much of yourselves to it!

Now go enjoy Kolach Days with those grandkids. ❤️

America is celebrating its 250th Birthday, and we’d love for Verdigre to join in! And, good news…we don’t even have to change the color scheme. Czech pride and American pride both look great in red, white, and blue! No need to buy new decorations… just swap the Czech flag for Old Glory. ❤️🤍💙

We’re encouraging everyone—homes, businesses, farms, cabins, storefronts, and neighborhoods—to decorate in red, white, and blue this summer. 🇺🇸✨

Let’s fill our community with flags, lights, flowers, patriotic displays, and hometown pride. Let’s make Verdigre a place everyone enjoys driving through and celebrating together.

Another Kolach Days is in the books, and what a weekend it was. This weekend is always a reminder of what makes our little town so special!

To everyone who attended, volunteered, sponsored an event, donated, participated, shared our posts, or simply showed up to support our community… thank you. Events like these don’t happen because of one person. They happen because hundreds of people quietly give their time, talents, and energy to make something memorable for everyone else.

A special thank you to our businesses, organizations, first responders, city crews, entertainers, committee members, and every volunteer who spent months planning and countless hours working behind the scenes. Your efforts are what keep this tradition alive and thriving.

Whether you came for the kolaches, the pivo, the music, the Czech heritage, or just to catch up with friends and family, we hope you left with great memories.

Here’s to another incredible year of celebrating our community!
