Families are feeling the impact of rising costs every day. The war with Iran has driven up energy prices and the effects have rippled through the economy – raising costs at the gas pump, increasing utility bills, and making groceries more expensive. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Californians could lose access to critical food assistance benefits. Working families are being asked to absorb higher costs on multiple fronts, and we deserve policies that strengthen – not strain – our economic stability.

📊Source: Fortune (June 2, 2026), citing Moody's Analytics: The war with Iran has cost U.S. families an estimated $100 billion so far – roughly $750 per household – due to higher energy prices and increased military spending.

🚨 The 30-day public comment period has OFFICIALLY started! Watch this clip to learn how to submit public comments!

This is our moment to make our voices heard.

The Rent Stabilization Ordinance will impact thousands of renters in Santa Barbara, and City Staff needs to hear directly from the people most affected by rising rents, displacement, housing insecurity, and the struggle to stay in our community. Every protection in this ordinance exists because community members organized, shared their stories, and demanded action. Now we need to show up again.

The public comment period for Santa Barbara's Rent Stabilization Ordinance has officially started and because of community organizing, Ellis Act and Just Cause protections will now move forward alongside the rent stabilization Ordinance!

Reviewing these policies together creates a complete approach to housing stability and keeps momentum moving forward without waiting for lengthy processes to secure basic protections against displacement and unjust evictions.

This is what community power looks like: tenants showing up, speaking out, and demanding stronger protections!

The work isn't over. Now it's time to review the ordinance, submit comments, and make sure the final policy reflects what renters have been asking for from the beginning.

As families across California continue to face rising costs for housing, groceries, and everyday necessities, new federal cuts to food assistance are making it even harder for many to get by. More than 600,000 Californians have lost access to critical nutrition benefits, with thousands of households in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties among those affected.

At a time when working families are already stretching every dollar, these cuts raise serious concerns about food security and economic stability in communities throughout our region.

The reality is simple: no one should have to choose between paying rent, covering transportation costs, or putting food on the table.

On Monday, federal cuts to food assistance took effect, stripping more than 600,000 Californians of access to food and impacting thousands of families across Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties at a time when we need support most.

Gas prices are up. Grocery bills are up. Rent is up. Yet instead of helping working families keep up with the rising cost of living, the federal government is taking food off the tables of people already struggling to make ends meet.

While billionaires continue to benefit from policies that make them wealthier, working families are being asked to shoulder more and more of the burden. No one should have to choose between paying rent, filling their gas tank, or putting food on the table.
