Santa Clara River Conservancy

The Santa Clara River Conservancy (SCRC) is a conservation organization formed to maintain connectivity of natural resources throughout the watershed.

The Santa Clara River Conservancy was awarded $2,018,000 from the Wildlife Conservation Board to restore 70 acres of riparian habitat along the Santa Clara River, just south of Santa Paula. Working alongside the California Department
of Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Water Resources, and The Nature Conservancy, staff and crews will remove invasive plants, clear agricultural debris and artificial berms, and plant native vegetation to revive four acres of riparian forest and 66 acres of riparian woodland. The effort completes a missing link across 120 acres of contiguous restored habitat, benefiting wildlife corridors as well as species like the least Bell’s vireo, southwestern willow flycatcher, and monarch butterfly.

A cool find from the other day in the field — mountain lion tracks! 🐾 We love to find evidence of thriving native fauna on our sites. These mountain lion tracks were accompanied by some kind of continuous curvy line. We hypothesized that perhaps the mountain lion was carrying or dragging something along with it, such as prey.

This week, Cara Allen from the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) came out to our Cienega Springs Ecological Reserve and UCSB’s Prairie Pacific site, where SCRC work closely with UCSB. Cara’s goal with touring was to assess the progress of ecological restoration at the sites. WCB are major funders for these sites, so their partnership with us is crucial to their progress. Thank you Cara for your time!

It’s been a busy week for SCRC! We completed annual vegetation transect monitoring this week at our Cienega Springs Ecological Reserve site, where our staff, along with our partners at UCSB, monitor native and nonnative vegetation along 29 different transects throughout the site. These transects are all associated with different habitat types, resulting in lots of variation in vegetation from transect to transect.
We also hosted a volunteer event with corporate staff from Patagonia’s Ventura office, where they helped us hand w**d around native plantings 🤗🪴Thanks Patagonia for your help!

One of the reasons it is important to remove Arundo donax from the riverbed is because of the high fire danger created by this invasive reed.

Here, water drops from a fire helicopter quickly limit the spread of a fire in the riverbed in Fillmore on Father's Day weekend.

This week, SCRC had a great time with homeschooled students from Ventura County and their parents. We gave them a tour of our Cienega Springs Ecological Reserve and played plant and animal bingo!
Looking forward to having more students out at site this upcoming school year!

Did you know Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea) actually attracts hummingbirds? This is thanks to their bright flowers and tall height, giving these little birds, along with a number of other pollinators, easy access to nectar.

A big thank you to our interns from Ventura High School - Laurel, Lilly, and Stephanie - who helped us out with plenty of w**ding, watering, and planting throughout this semester. We couldn’t have gotten so much done without you guys!

A beautiful but breezy morning at the Cienega Springs Ecological Reserve.

As the native plants are really filling in along the preserve, it is hard to believe that this area was just watercress fields just a few years ago.
