Post 339 is a big contributor to the Ventura College Schlorship Foundation. Our contributions to this foundation provides scholarships to deserving veterans in their quest to continue their education. Below is a letter from from one of the recipients of this schlorship. We’re proud to help vets like this:

Dear Mr. McKendry, Commander, American Legion Post 339,

I wanted to take the time to say thank you so much for your scholarship award. I could hardly contain my excitement to tell my friends and family of the good news. When I found out that it came from the American Legion, I was doubly pleased, as I felt that culture of unity once again. The military really brings all of us together, together. Thank you not only for the scholarship opportunity, but as well for reminding me that we are one military, across all branches. We're here for each other every way we can be.

I was an Air Force maintenance tech. I worked on military aircraft for my enlistment, and always found myself asking "well why is..." about the aircraft I was assigned. I determined that the best way for me to answer those questions was to become an engineer myself and see just what it takes to create modern marvels. Because of my experience, I chose to pursue Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering as a specialty, with a ground layer of Mechanical Engineering.

My goal is to obtain my bachelor's degree through the Bell Program of Iron Range Engineering. I was privileged to meet with one of their facilitators and hear about the program, and knew that was the direction I wanted to take. I hope to be attending their program next fall. I am dreaming big and aim to work with experimental aircraft with Lockheed Martin in my future. This provides me with the perfect start.

Thank you for your investment in my future. I will keep my focus on achieving my success as a student and future engineer until I can be on the other side of thank you notes such as this. Transitioning out of the military was not, and sometimes still isn't easy. This scholarship means so much to me. Having the peace of mind not only about the resources, but also the faith that I can and will achieve my goals.

Sincerely,

Timothy Jackman

Congratulations to the 2019 representatives to Boys State from Post 339 in Ventura. The Post was proud to sponsor these young men from high schools throughout Ventura, Santa Paula and Fillmore. The knowledge gained and memories made from this experience will last a lifetime. We hope this experience and the scholarships awarded each one the motivation to continue along the path to making a difference in their communities and the country.

As we begin the holiday season, the Post has continued its tradition of donating funds to the VA Home in Ventura for Christmas gift cards for all the residents there. Our fellow vets living there look forward to these cards each year. They get to go shopping and find that little something they couldn’t otherwise afford. There are 60 comrades residing at the Home.
