A recent study published on nature.com reported how sand is growing on some beaches but eroding from others. While human impacts from dams reduce river sediment fluxes and are primary causes of coastal erosion worldwide, manmade structures such as jetties and harbors seem to be building up sand for some beaches.
The study noted that beaches along Malibu’s coast are experiencing severe erosion from an insufficient sediment supply. These facts highlight the critical role that longshore sediment transport plays in long-term beach trends and suggests a need for management opportunities for coastal sustainability at the regional scale.

Our studies indicate that much of the 800K cubic yards of sediment behind Rindge Dam is good for redistribution to local, vulnerable beaches!

The complete sand study led by UC Irvine and the U.S. Geological Survey is published on https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-68880-9

Sandy beaches are dynamic ecosystems that connect land and sea--protecting against coastal erosion, filtering water, providing food and serving as nurseries for plants, fish, reptiles, and birds. Often a hidden biodiversity, they are often overlooked as a vital and biodiverse environment that harbors high densities of organisms. Beaches also play a role as a bioindicator for monitoring healthy, functioning ecosystems. Before your next visit to the beach, take a moment to discover the hidden world beneath your feet on our latest blog post:

Malibu’s naturally formed long, consistent wave break is believed to be “the exact spot on earth where ancient surfing became modern surfing,” according to Paul Gross, a former editor of Surfer Magazine. In 2018, this recognition became formal by the State of California Natural Resource Agency designating Malibu Point as the Malibu Historic District.
