May 23,2026: Current status

Firefighters continue to make excellent progress on the island wildfire, holding the blaze at 18,379 acres with *no perimeter growth reported.* Containment has now increased to 72% following a highly productive day of establishing additional control lines and a very quiet night of minimal fire activity.

While the risk remains low, crews stay vigilant on the ground to monitor and extinguish isolated hot spots that could threaten containment lines. Today’s efforts are focused on the west side of the fire, south of Soledad Peak and Radar Peak, where ground crews are coordinating with an uncrewed aircraft system module to directly extinguish remaining heat along the fire’s edge.

As containment grows, specialized crews, resource advisors, and heavy equipment operators are also beginning suppression-repair work at the Main Ranch Complex, while simultaneously demobilizing equipment that is no longer required. To sustain these ongoing operations, a supply boat is arriving this morning to deliver fresh equipment, restocking, and essential supplies for the dedicated personnel on the line.

Thank you, hotshots and on-the-ground personnel!

Santa Rosa Island Fire Update – May 20, 2026–per InciWeb.wildfire.gov:

Progress is being made on the island. While the fire remains active on the eastern half, ground crews have successfully built a containment line along Telephone Road toward Cherry Canyon. (Containment is 26%)

Additional firefighting crews and equipment will arrive today, including the Chumash Fire Department.

Specially designed, compact Type-6 wildland fire engines were loaded onto the National Park Service landing craft last night and are arriving this morning. Their smaller size allows them to navigate the island’s rugged, non-paved dirt roads perfectly.

Firefighters are proactively enhancing defensible space around the historic Main Ranch Complex to keep it safe.

Unmanned aircraft (drones) are heading toward the Torrey Pines area for a condition assessment, while observation aircraft coordinate from above to scout out drop opportunities for water-scooping air tankers (which can dump 1,500 gallons at a time!).

A massive thank you to all the agencies working tirelessly to protect Santa Rosa Island and Channel Islands National Park.
