Did you know that the graduation rate we hear so much about does not equal the college readiness rate?
•
According to the California Department of Education, Ed-Data, in 2018-2019, the high school graduation rate in Ventura County was about 86%. But only 47% of graduates met the UC/CSU entrance, A-G, course requirements 🤔. Though we have posted this, we must now add that the 2019-2020 statistic is the same. Once again, only 47% of graduates met the UC/CSU course requirements.
•
We owe it to ourselves and the next generation of students to help close that gap and get everyone on the road to college and into thriving careers✨
•
There will always be a need for more resources for students! And we’re here to provide information, resources, and personal support to 8th grade and high school students to understand, plan for and go through the college process.

A high school student wanting to go to a university in the CSU or UC system must fulfill specific courses in high school that meet the minimum admission requirements. Those course requirements are all arranged in specific categories, from A-G - thus the term, A-G requirements.

The A-G requirements include 7 core subject categories with many class options available through each. Students must take the required number of courses for each category and pass them with a C or better for it to count.

So, as you’re scrolling through Facebook now, take a moment to think about if you’re on track!

🤝You can also screenshot or save this post to look back on for future reference! Or, you can head over to our website where you will find a downloadable version in the “PDFs” tab!

If you’re an incoming Senior getting ready to apply to college, just know that your grades are not a reflection of your worth. They do not encompass the entirety of your application. You, a student, are more than just your stats or a grade you got in a course. They do not measure your potential in life, nor what you can become.

Want to stand out in your college applications?

Girl’s/Boy’s State is an opportunity to do so! The American Legion Auxiliary Girl's State and the American Legion Boy's State are prestigious summer leadership opportunities that are earned by one female and one male high school junior from every participating high school in California (other states also have Girl/Boy's State programs!).

In the last slide we’ve included 2 quotes, one Girl’s State Alum and Boy’s State Alum who briefly tell us what they learned not only academically but on a more personal level!

Our How I Made It Happen: A College Series Part 1 has come to a close! What amazing high school graduates Ventura County has to help encourage and provide guidance for all future college admissions applicants. Thank you to each student leader for being willing to take part in our series✨

With every student came a story, different background, and experience with not only high school but the college admissions process. Our hope is that you are able to connect with one of these students. Whether it’s taking care of a loved one after school like Xiomara, being a dependent of Navy veterans like Nia, starting a club like Emery, wanting to stay close to home like Elvira and Leslie, or even going to a different state to compete in a competition like Jade; they made it happen and you can too! Connecting the common reoccurring tips like preparing early is also important!

Even if you didn’t closely connect with one of these students, know that they are Ventura County graduates, alumni who walked through the high schools you know of or even attended, and they made it happen.

Remember! College is an option for all. As Nathaly demonstrated, grades and test scores are not the whole of your application! And if you’re unsure of which major you’d like to pursue, do some research like Azariah to find the perfect fit! As Steven stated, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Take chances, find what you’re passionate about through extracurriculars, and don’t shy away from applying to prestigious colleges. “There’s that cheesy saying: Shoot for the moon and you may land on the stars.” As Steven mentioned, it may be cheesy, and it may not make sense because the moon is closer, but see the truth within the saying. Dream big, because rejection is only a redirection to something better.

We hope you enjoyed the series and have watched all of the videos! You can do so on YouTube or on our IG TV lives! Share it with a friend interested in applying to any of the universities!

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Has attending MIT ever crossed your mind?

Jade is a Ventura County graduate who is a sophomore taking a a gap year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)!

MIT is a prestigious research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT has been named the world’s top university by the QS World University Rankings.

Through our How I Made It Happen: A College Series, Jade provides insight on his high school experience and stats. Although, he cautions students that the narrative of “if you get certain stats you will get into a certain university” is false. Jade, like many of us students, believes that stats are not the deciding factor. They are not the whole of your application that will make or break your chances of attending a school. He also lets us know what it’s like to be a student at MIT - the location, architecture, classes, and even what you might encounter on your way to an electronics lab;
a group that’s practicing lightsaber dueling!

We cannot wait for you to see this video next week, June 16th! If you’d like to watch more of our series head over to our IG TV tab where you will find students from Stanford, UC Berkeley, Pitzer College, UCSB, Cal Lutheran, and more!
