Sadly there has been some concern in the neighborhood about rat poison being put in storm drains. We admit rats are a nuisance and non of us want them however poisioning them creates so many more problem. Including killing other wildlife/pets , odor issues and unsafe conditions.
Here are some suggestions that do not involve poison, please take these into consideration if you need to control rats in your area.

Best non-poison methods

1. Snap traps (fastest and most effective)

Classic snap traps still work better than most “humane” gadgets.

* Use large rat-sized traps, not mouse traps
* Bait ideas:
* Peanut butter
* Nutella
* Bacon
* Oats mixed with peanut butter
* Place traps:
* Along walls
* Behind appliances
* Near droppings
* Perpendicular to the wall with bait facing the wall

Wear gloves if possible — rats can avoid heavy human scent.

2. Seal entry points

If you don’t close access holes, new rats often replace the old ones.

Look for:

* Gaps around pipes
* Garage corners
* Roof/soffit openings
* Dryer vents
* Under sinks

Seal with:

* Steel wool + caulk
* Metal mesh/hardware cloth
* Cement for larger holes

Rats can squeeze through holes around the size of a quarter.

3. Remove food and water

This matters more than most people realize.

* Store pet food in sealed bins
* Don’t leave pet bowls overnight
* Secure trash lids
* Clean fallen bird seed/fruit
* Fix dripping hoses or pipes

4. Electric traps

These kill quickly without poison and are reusable.

Good for:

* Indoors
* Garages
* Attics

They’re cleaner than snap traps but cost more.

5. Bucket traps (good for sheds/barns)

DIY rolling-log bucket traps can catch multiple rats overnight.

Useful if you have:

* Outdoor infestations
* Chicken feed
* Barns or storage areas

6. Natural deterrents (limited but sometimes helpful)

These usually won’t solve an infestation alone, but may help discourage activity:

* Peppermint oil
* Ammonia smell
* Used cat litter near entry points
* Motion lights outdoors

Rats often get used to smells over time.

Things that usually do NOT work well

* Ultrasonic plug-ins
* Mothballs
* One-time spraying
* “Home remedy”

Important reason to avoid poison

You’re smart to avoid it if possible:

* Poisoned rats can die in walls and smell terrible
* Pets/wildlife can be harmed secondarily
* Owls, hawks, cats, and dogs can get sick

If you tell me whether the rats are:

* inside the house,
* attic,
* garage,
* yard,
* or around chickens/feed

Look familiar? If it’s yours let us know! It’s really nice and not damaged so I’d love to get it back to its owner!

Hey everyone. One of our VECA members had a parcel stolen from their porch . It had been delivered earlier and was still on the porch at 4.00 am when cameras caught the theft.

So be aware if you are expecting a parcel or a gift because you may not get notification that it’s there.

Thieves take advantage of opportunities. Don’t give them one.

Two dead female deer were found on Venice East Boulevard Tuesday, May 5th — one in the median and one near the pumping station. There was also a dead Sandhill Crane at Lakes of Jacaranda and a dead ibis near Center Road and Venice East Boulevard, all within the last week.

This stretch between Indian Hills and Lakes of Jacaranda is an active wildlife corridor connected to Alligator Creek and Alligator Lakes. Traffic on Venice East Boulevard has increased significantly as it has become a major route between Rt. 41 and Center Road. Sadly, more and more wildlife is being killed, and the current flashing speed signs do not seem to be slowing drivers down. It is also becoming increasingly dangerous for bicyclists who share this road.

We are trying to find out which agencies, wildlife organizations, county departments, or local officials are actually responsible for helping with wildlife protection, road safety concerns, wildlife corridor signage, speed enforcement, or road calming measures in this area.

If anyone knows:
• who handles wildlife corridor protection in Sarasota County
• who to contact regarding road safety changes or signage
• organizations that advocate for wildlife crossings or traffic calming
• or communities willing to help petition for changes

Please comment below or message

We have already made multiple phone calls, including to Sarasota County and wildlife hotlines, but so far we have not been directed to the right place for meaningful assistance. Any guidance or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, if you drive Venice East Boulevard, please slow down and encourage others to do the same. Even small changes in speed can save wildlife and make the road safer for everyone.

Thank you for your help and concern.
