The international research team has arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina and there are two days left until the crew boards the vessel for Antarctica on our first pilot expedition to study the colossal squid! Looking like big seas (possible 20+ ft waves) for their journey across the Drake Passage - this leg is often dubbed the 'Drake Shake'. The backers of the crowdfunding campaign have gone directly to the travel, insurance, equipment, (and seasickness pills) for the researchers and made this whole expedition possible! A whole hearted thanks on this

Missed the crowdfunding campaign, but donation curious? No problem you can give directly to KOLOSSAL here:

One week left on our crowdfunding campaign! Time for our top ten reasons that we should

Over the last seven years we have been working on an expedition to Antarctica to study the colossal squid. It’s been a true blue startup…

We are back, and after 7 years of work we are FINALLY going to Antarctica! Any support on our crowdfunding campaign for colossal squid research and conservation is most appreciated!

This week we launched a crowdfunding campaign via the Experiment Foundation for our expedition to find and film the colossal squid, and we could use your support. Can you donate $100 or $50 (a nice dinner, or a hefty bar tab) to go toward our expedition?

In the first 24 hours after launch we raised over $5,000, and if successful we could receive some matching support from the Experiment Foundation’s ocean solutions grant, so you will be doubling your support.

After starting this effort in 2015, we have now secured donated births on a tourism vessel The Ocean Endeavour for our researchers, and are finally months away from boarding this ship to Antarctica and deploying cameras into the depths of the Southern Ocean to study the world’s largest invertebrate. The dream is finally transforming into reality. We wouldn’t be here without our incredible partners. The deep-sea camera technologies, oceanographic winch, and cabling are being generously donated by SubC Imaging. The berths on the Ocean Endeavour for the researchers are being provided by Intrepid Travel , but we are still coming up a bit short on funds to support some additional research equipment, travel for the researchers, and insurance.

We have an international and interdisciplinary team supporting the effort with technologists, marine biologists, and polar tourism expedition experts. Ready to push onward and downward.

Let’s together on this exciting expedition. Thanks for any support.

For the ocean,
Matt Mulrennan, CEO, KOLOSSAL

We are launching a multi-year expedition to film a colossal squid in the deep sea for the first time off Antarctica to learn about its basic biology/behavior. With deep sea cameras we are surveying for the colossal squid to answer key questions about the species such as; how large they grow, most...

Join KOLOSSAL in supporting California bills SB54 and AB1080 to help eliminate most single-use plastic pollution, leading the U.S. in this important effort. We are asking that you repost or reach out to the representatives tagged on this post by the 31st of August to tell them to vote and show the strong public support for passing SB54/AB1080 “The California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act”

KOLOSSAL Family, we have some good news and some bad news.

We’ll start with the bad news. As some of you may have noticed, AB1080 and SB54 did not come up for a vote before the Senate and Assembly adjourned for the year. In short, the bills that aimed to eliminate single use plastics did not pass...yet.

And that’s where the good news comes in. Both of these bills are still eligible to be considered next year when the Senate and Assembly convene again.

At KOLOSSAL, we’re choosing to see the positive side. The extra time means we can continue to:
🌊Call our representatives, tell them how much these bills mean to us and demand change
🌊Continue to accrue petition signers in the hopes of sending our representatives a STACK of names of people that support these bills
🌊Show our documentary and educate those that may have no idea of these proposed bills and their impact
🌊Meet and chat with you all! We’re so thankful to have gained so many more followers, fans and signers during this time. We are so grateful and humbled that you are joining us in this fight. If you have any ideas where we can show our mini-documentary or chat with your friends about single-use plastics and actionable steps, please DM or email us. We’d love to continue to connect with all of you!

And don’t forget to continue to follow for more updates.

Environmental attorney Lisa Boyle, co-founder of the Plastic Pollution Coalition and legal policy advisor to WeTap, co-authored a report, “Public Drinking Water Policy on Tap at a Fountain Near You.", demonstrating how public drinking fountains are one way to help solve many of the detrimental consequences associated with plastic pollution (ex. obesity, tooth decay, dehydration, economic injustice and even climate change). Check out the report today!

A Tulane Law alumna who is a leading voice to ban single-use plastic straws has co-authored a report seeking to do the same with plastic bottles.

Celebrity sighting! Senator Ben Allen carves time out of his busy schedule to talk with Matt about SB-54, the California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. While the title is long, the mission is simple: reduce plastic pollution in the state of California by 75%. We share the same goal. Check out our documentary for more information, dropping tomorrow!

08/31/2019

KOLOSSAL and Stoked Ember Productions teamed up this summer to create “Act on Plastic,” a short documentary that demonstrates the threat of plastic to our ocean, and to advocate for legislation SB54/AB1080 - the “California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act”, which could drastically reduce single-use plastics.

Now the rest is up to you! Your representatives want to know that eliminating single-use plastics is important to you!

Check out the full film Monday on our Facebook and YouTube page and sign the petition on our website Kolossal.org! And act quickly because this bill’s passage is not assured and could be up for a vote before September 13th!
