Untouched Inherence

A mosaic of sound filled the beach, sharp in detail, a soft breeze through the rocky shore, sea birds casting sparks of brightness, and the indefinable endless hush that seemed to glue it all together. Overwhelm washed over me, as it often does, and mixed with a profound sensation. It started with the ringing in my ears, body sensations, waves crashing against the shore with only the moment present, the awareness that this is it, constantly changing, the razor-thin edge of now that the universe is balanced on. The past and future dissolved into what and why—and how should I witness all of this?

A multitude of colors flooded my mind, tree green to sky blue, tinged with the fresh scent of the sea and the musty fragrance of earth. I thought, there’s something here in the wildness, in the randomness of nature that should envelop my being that I seem to have forgotten. I feel like a tourist in these natural environs, trying to experience as much as possible in a short amount of time. But the reason for this bewildering sense of separation should be apparent to us, and the inherent overwhelm should be expected. We’re rediscovering our roots and greeting our long-lost mother.

Winter Harmony

“A few light taps upon the pane made him turn to the window. It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight.” ~ James Joyce, “The Dead”

The winter solstice is nature’s ancient marker of the holiday session, the undisputed original winter celebration. I can’t help but think of it as the grand return of the sun, a time to plan for spring. What seeds should I plant this year, and what would I like to harvest next fall? But of course, that’s only true because I live in the north, with the southern hemisphere in the throes of summer, looking forward to the cooler days of Autumn. There’s something pleasing about bringing these two ideas together, the winter and summer solstice happening at the same exact moment.

The winter solstice is a time to embrace the changing sessions, the spinning of the planets, a time to align with Earth’s natural rhythms. It’s an occasion for reflection and renewal, a reminder of our relationship with nature and each other. I see the solstice as an opportunity to understand our connection with all life and the importance of living in harmony with our environment.

The winter solstice is also an occasion to express gratitude for the gifts of nature. It’s a time to recognize our dependence on the natural world for sustenance, comfort, and inspiration. This gratitude nurtures a deeper connection with our mother earth and a greater sense of our responsibility to protect her. This holiday season, I invite you to take a walk in a park or spend some time in the woods and reflect on your relationship with the natural world. I think you’ll come away with a special holiday treat.

The Red Wagon

By neglect or overwork, whatever the cause, I rediscovered the childhood fracture in my back called a pars defect. A few doctor visits and another round of physical therapy reminded me of the whole ordeal. At the age of fifteen, I was hospitalized for tests and X-rays while they tried to get me back on my feet. I’d overheard two surgeons discussing a possible operation while they pointed at my X-ray. The spectacle left me crushed with despair. As it turned out, our old-school family doctor wouldn’t let them cut on me, but at the time, I thought the operation was a certainty.

I shared a room with another teenager in the pediatric ward. There I was, lying in bed, feeling sorry for myself—yes, deep, unabashed self-pity. The next afternoon, a grandmother strolled in the door, pulling her three-year-old granddaughter in a red wagon. The child had a thick bandage wrapped around her head, and she sat as still as a doll. In a cheerful voice, the grandmother introduced the girl and explained that she recently had a brain tumor removed. Her parents couldn’t be there so she was keeping the child company. The doctors did their best, but the sweet-faced little girl wouldn’t live much longer. The grandmother came around every day with the red wagon, carrying that beautiful child, staring into space.

I was wracked with guilt for being so self-absorbed. The thought that went through my head was something like, “I’ve already lived a full life compared to that little one. I have nothing to complain about.” You know, I think I’m actually glad my back decided to act up again. I needed the reminder.
